From Mormon Missionary to Catholic (Isaac Hess) | Ep. 437

What do typhoon evacuations, koala selfies, and second breakfast in Hobbiton have in common? They’ve all been part of Deacon Bob’s adventurous month. 
After a few weeks apart, Father Dave and Deacon Bob are back, swapping globe-trotting tales, ministry moments, and a surprisingly full slate of sports updates. Bob’s recent trip took him from the typhoon-swept Philippines to Singapore, Perth, Sydney, and a bucket-list stop in New Zealand’s Hobbiton (yes, complete with hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and second breakfast). 
Along the way, he preached to 90 youth leaders just hours after a typhoon hit, met a koala, saw kangaroos, and even met a listener named Rain who drove five hours just to hear him speak. There were plenty of memorable meals, from perfect pancakes to less-than-crispy bacon. 
Meanwhile, Father Dave stayed stateside, baptizing great-nieces (one walked to her own baptism), speaking at the Knights of Columbus Conference, and making a moving visit to the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City. He shares Rother’s remarkable story—from failing Latin in seminary, to obeying his bishop’s call to return to Guatemala, to his martyrdom in 1981—and the beauty of a shrine built right in the heart of the city it serves. 
Sports fans get plenty too: the debut of MLB’s first female umpire Jen Pawol (including her Hall of Fame–bound first pitch), Tom Brady’s towering new statue, and even a trivia challenge about the University of Michigan making draft history. 
Naturally, there are detours, including CGI vs. AI, bad sports statues, and ministry moments that transcended cultural boundaries. But through it all, the heart stays the same: joyfully sharing the Gospel, wherever God sends you (even if it’s to a sheep paddock in New Zealand).

For over thirty years, Catholic sculptor Tim Schmalz has been visually translating sacred scripture and creating spiritual artwork through his bronze sculptures. Tim believes that sculpture is just the skin that covers an idea, a belief, and a truth. Homeless Jesus | Tim Schmalz | Episode #223

In Session 2, we looked at the “greatest modern saint” and saw that she was a “chip off the old block.” In this session we will consider the “greatest modern prophet and miracle worker” in the Church - St. Don Bosco.

Perhaps the greatest miracle that Don Bosco worked is developing a “fool proof” method for forming youth.  The foundation of the Preventive System is the abiding presence of the father. Indeed, Don Bosco based the entire system upon the vision of a father within the home.

Above all else, the father was to ensure the moral and spiritual formation of his children so that one day they
would all be together in heaven.  We will see that, “Bad books, bad companions and bad habits” lead innocent youths astray. We are called to be the protectors of our families.  

Today, the enemy is most frequently within our gates and God has given us a stern warning.

Most people are walking around feeling inferior to someone else. It might be because of social media, or criticism from others, or just constant negative self-talk. The truth is that we all have some negative voice either externally or internally that tells us we aren't good enough.
When we feel inferior to others, we often experience the urge to go find someone we can feel superior to in turn. And then comes the judging. We look down on other people and each other for the pettiest of reasons, just to make ourselves look and feel better. But we know we are called to higher living than this.

Jesus is the one true Shepherd of the Church who entrusts the care of his flock to Peter, the first pope and chief shepherd of the Church on earth, and to Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles.  Despite their limitations and sinfulness, Peter and Paul were filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly professed the truth and beauty of faith in Christ Jesus.
