Today I chat with Fr. Objection 1. It would seem unlawful to kill any living thing. For the Apostle says (Romans 13:2): "They that resist the ordinance of God purchase to themselves damnation [Vulgate: 'He that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist, purchase themselves damnation.']." Now Divine providence has ordained that all living things should be preserved, according to Psalm 146:8-9, "Who maketh grass to grow on the mountains . . . Who giveth to beasts their food." Therefore it seems unlawful to take the life of any living thing. Objection 2. Further, murder is a sin because it deprives a man of life. Now life is common to all animals and plants. Hence for the same reason it is apparently a sin to slay dumb animals and plants. Objection 3. Further, in the Divine law a special punishment is not appointed save for a sin. Now a special punishment had to be inflicted, according to the Divine law, on one who killed another man's ox or sheep (Exodus 22:1). Therefore the slaying of dumb animals is a sin. On the contrary, Augustine says (De Civ. Dei i, 20): "When we hear it said, 'Thou shalt not kill,' we do not take it as referring to trees, for they have no sense, nor to irrational animals, because they have no fellowship with us. Hence it follows that the words, 'Thou shalt not kill' refer to the killing of a man." I answer that, There is no sin in using a thing for the purpose for which it is. Now the order of things is such that the imperfect are for the perfect, even as in the process of generation nature proceeds from imperfection to perfection. Hence it is that just as in the generation of a man there is first a living thing, then an animal, and lastly a man, so too things, like the plants, which merely have life, are all alike for animals, and all animals are for man. Wherefore it is not unlawful if man use plants for the good of animals, and animals for the good of man, as the Philosopher states (Polit. i, 3). Now the most necessary use would seem to consist in the fact that animals use plants, and men use animals, for food, and this cannot be done unless these be deprived of life: wherefore it is lawful both to take life from plants for the use of animals, and from animals for the use of men. On fact this is in keeping with the commandment of God Himself: for it is written (Genesis 1:29-30): "Behold I have given you every herb . . . and all trees . . . to be your meat, and to all beasts of the earth": and again (Genesis 9:3): "Everything that moveth and liveth shall be meat to you." Reply to Objection 1. According to the Divine ordinance the life of animals and plants is preserved not for themselves but for man. Hence, as Augustine says (De Civ. Dei i, 20), "by a most just ordinance of the Creator, both their life and their death are subject to our use." Reply to Objection 2. Dumb animals and plants are devoid of the life of reason whereby to set themselves in motion; they are moved, as it were by another, by a kind of natural impulse, a sign of which is that they are naturally enslaved and accommodated to the uses of others. Reply to Objection 3. He that kills another's ox, sins, not through killing the ox, but through injuring another man in his property. Wherefore this is not a species of the sin of murder but of the sin of theft or robbery. Fr. Nigel Mumford On Healing and Deliverance

Friends, do not miss this episode. In its entirety. ---Michele Gower was raised in a loving, middle-class family in Sydney, Australia. Though baptized in the Church of England, religion played little role in her early life. Her parents were kind, community-oriented people but had no strong religious beliefs. As a teenager, she chased popularity, partied on weekends, dabbled in light drugs, and barely got by in school. Yet she remained active in sports, volunteered, and was known as a loyal friend. At 17, she met Rohan—a respectful, calm young man whose peaceful nature stood out. The following year, her life shattered when her father died suddenly of a heart attack the morning after her graduation. From that moment, she rejected the idea of a loving God, asking bitterly, “What kind of God would take a father from his daughter on her graduation day?”As adulthood unfolded, she and Rohan got married, had four children, and settled into a life on the Central Coast. Though she had no faith, she supported the decision to send their children to Catholic school. Her husband had been raised Catholic, and she assumed he could guide them spiritually. Over time, she began to feel strangely moved during school Masses. Often, she would sit in church and cry without understanding why. While she appreciated the values of kindness and service taught in the Catholic school, she was simultaneously diving deeper into New Age spirituality—tarot, clairvoyants, energy healing, and a fascination with the supernatural. The more she pursued these practices, the more her connection to reality began to fray.Eventually, she experienced a complete breakdown. Voices, paranoia, terrifying visions, and a crushing emptiness took over her mind. Admitted to a mental health facility, she was heavily medicated and nearly unrecognizable to her loved ones. But one day, sitting alone by a locked glass door, she felt an overwhelming warmth fill her chest—a powerful, soul-filling explosion of light. In that moment, she heard a message in her heart: “Convert to the Catholic Faith, and you and your family will be saved.” Though she didn’t fully understand it, that moment marked a turning point. She began to believe that God was real—and that He was reaching out to her in mercy.The weeks leading up to her reception into the Church were filled with intense spiritual battles. Demonic attacks, confusion, and despair tried to derail her. But friends who understood the dangers of the occult prayed with her, taught her to say the Rosary, and reminded her that God never lets go of His children. Through Confession and the Eucharist, she began to heal. The torment in her mind lifted, layer by layer. She experienced true peace for the first time in her life—peace that surpassed all understanding. After a deep reversion experience in his sophomore year by attending a silent retreat during spring break, he fell back in love with his Catholic faith. He began to discern a vocation towards the priesthood. Fr. Piega graduated from Texas A&amp;M University with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Business Administration, where shortly thereafter he entered the seminary. He is an alumnus of St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, Louisiana, and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, where he received a Bachelors in Philosophy and Theology respectively. He then studied at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and acquired a licentiate degree in the Sacred Liturgy and also studied at the Pontifical North American College in Rome.Father Piega is an ordained priest and is in service to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Austin, Texas. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him. Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens" 2241. The Summa Here's what I read from Thomas: "Man's relations with foreigners are twofold: peaceful, and hostile: and in directing both kinds of relation the Law contained suitable precepts. For the Jews were offered three opportunities of peaceful relations with foreigners. First, when foreigners passed through their land as travelers. Secondly, when they came to dwell in their land as newcomers. And in both these respects the Law made kind provision in its precepts: for it is written (Exodus 22:21): "Thou shalt not molest a stranger [advenam]"; and again (Exodus 22:9): "Thou shalt not molest a stranger [peregrino]." Thirdly, when any foreigners wished to be admitted entirely to their fellowship and mode of worship. With regard to these a certain order was observed. For they were not at once admitted to citizenship: just as it was law with some nations that no one was deemed a citizen except after two or three generations, as the Philosopher says (Polit. iii, 1). The reason for this was that if foreigners were allowed to meddle with the affairs of a nation as soon as they settled down in its midst, many dangers might occur, since the foreigners not yet having the common good firmly at heart might attempt something hurtful to the people. Into the Breach – Episode 5: Family

Ever a professional, the dandy-dressed Stephen Henley joins the BeatiDudes, Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein, to talk about the journey of his life on the way to becoming the president of Legatus. Stephen spent two and a half years discerning the priesthood with the Legionaries of Christ, where he wrote his vocation story – aptly titled, God’s Marine. After discerning out of the seminar, the military theme continued, and Stephen joined the Marine Corps. During his time in the reserves, Stephen ended up in Florida, which proved to be an essential stop in his journey. Not only did he meet his wife during his time in the Sunshine State, but he also started his professional career by working at Ave Maria University. Like Legatus, Ave Maria was also started by Catholic business hero Tom Monaghan. Tom Monaghan founded Domino’s Pizza after being raised in orphanages and accidentally joining the Marine Corps. With much business and professional success, Tom searched for a place for executives to gather for Christ. After an impactful encounter with Saint Pope John Paul II, Tom was inspired to launch Legatus. In Latin, Legatus means ambassador, and that is exactly what Tom was promoting for Presidents, CEOs, and their spouses to become - Ambassadors for God. Stephen’s working relationship with Tom stemmed from a period when Tom required a driver while recovering from wrist surgery. Twenty years later, Stephen is now the President of Legatus.
