I Am Not Yet Ascended to My Father | Bible Study w/ Aquinas

She grew up playing soccer from the age of 9 and played goalkeeper and striker for AC Premier, Croatia Cleveland, and Kirtland High School and was trained under some notable former U.S. national team players.  She also has received her youth futsal/indoor referee license from the U.S. Soccer Federation, and she served as the girls’ head soccer coach at Braves Soccer Academy for U9-U11 teams for two years.  She now partners with Ignite Athlete Training in Dallas, Texas, as a soccer trainer. Meanwhile, she quit her six-figure, Fortune 500 job in corporate America as an HR consultant at age 26 to start her own business helping faith-based believers who feel like they've hit a breaking point in their lives or careers to discover their unique purpose, boost their confidence, and become the most authentic versions of themselves while keeping Christ as the focal point through mind-body-spirit wellness and connection.

WOF 123: Religion and “A Quiet Place”

Among the saints in the New Testament Saint Paul stands apart.  He was successful in ways that we can’t even measure.  He was the apostle to the Gentiles, the founder of churches, and the model for evangelizers.  But Saint Paul also knew hard times: riots, anxieties, afflictions, imprisonment.  What can we learn from the things the Bible shows us where Saint Paul knew not only victory but defeat.

Back in his days as a student-athlete, after having played for the well-known Rockhurst High School, he attended Missouri Western State University on a four-year football scholarship and would go on to be inducted into their Hall of Fame.  He was also selected as the Missouri Western 25th Anniversary Scholar-Athlete Award by the university in 2001.  Later in life he would serve as the Kansas City Chiefs Team Dentist for 23 years. Meanwhile, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph, but is currently assigned to the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas. Concentrating much of his efforts in the Ministry of Respect Life issues, alongside two other non-profits that he is a part of, he has co-founded a 501(c)3 called Deacons of Hope, aimed at organizing the Ministries of Deacons into a community of Deacons who emphasize pro-life initiatives. It has even gotten the seal of approval from the Vatican and Deacons of Hope aims to reach Deacons and parishes around the U.S., if not internationally too.

You've heard me talk about Exodus 90 — but let me tell you about Exodus Lent: a 40-day journey that will challenge you to dig a little deeper this year.

If your first reaction is: "I'm absolutely not taking cold showers" well you're in luck: men who take on the Exodus Lent get to take warm showers, drink alcohol, and — when you’re with others — watch TV and sports. But don’t be fooled, this will still be a challenging 40 days of preparation for living the Christian life, for the rest of your life.

First — Over the 40 days of Lent, men commit to daily prayer, setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes to spend with the Lord. Each day includes a scripture reading and reflection written to help men better understand, grow in, and live virtue.

Sometimes we imagine saints to be people who have life all figured out.  They seem to know and execute on God’s plan perfectly and therefore it can be hard for us to try and imitate them.  The life of St. Paul, however, shows us something very different.  Many times he did not know what to do and yet he still made decisions.  How did a saint as great as St. Paul make decisions about God’s will?  How did St. Paul know what to do?  By looking at the scriptures we can learn value lessons to help us in our leadership as well.

Here's what Aquinas had to say on the matter: I answer that, An act is virtuous through being directed by reason to some virtuous [honestum] [Cf. II-II:145:1] good. Now this is consistent with fasting, because fasting is practiced for a threefold purpose. First, in order to bridle the lusts of the flesh, wherefore the Apostle says (2 Corinthians 6:5-6): "In fasting, in chastity," since fasting is the guardian of chastity. For, according to Jerome [Contra Jov. ii.] "Venus is cold when Ceres and Bacchus are not there," that is to say, lust is cooled by abstinence in meat and drink. Secondly, we have recourse to fasting in order that the mind may arise more freely to the contemplation of heavenly things: hence it is related (Daniel 10) of Daniel that he received a revelation from God after fasting for three weeks. Thirdly, in order to satisfy for sins: wherefore it is written (Joel 2:12): "Be converted to Me with all your heart, in fasting and in weeping and in mourning." The same is declared by Augustine in a sermon (De orat. et Jejun. [Serm. lxxii (ccxxx, de Tempore)]): "Fasting cleanses the soul, raises the mind, subjects one's flesh to the spirit, renders the heart contrite and humble, scatters the clouds of concupiscence, quenches the fire of lust, kindles the true light of chastity." WOF 090: Beauty in the Catholic Tradition

He is a College Scout with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a first round draft pick in the 1995 NFL Draft and went on to play nine years with Pittsburgh and then five years with the Houston Texans.  In total he played in 188 regular season games and five in the playoffs.  He also served on the NFL Players Association Executive Committee.  Back in his days as a student-athlete he played college football for the Washington Huskies, earning All-American honors in 1993.  Five years ago, he was enshrined in the Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame.

Matthew Zeik is a 5th-grade teacher at The Highlands School in Irving, Texas, where six of the BeatiDudes’ kids attend. Mr. Zeik takes his spot at the tiny table during Catholic Schools Week to share his love for teaching and his unique pathway to get there. After entering a minor seminary at thirteen years old, Mr. Zeik spent more than half his life pursuing a religious vocation before discerning his exit. During his time at the seminary, he had the opportunity to work in schools, and he loved it. He discovered his passion for Catholic education and decided to pursue teaching. Twenty years later, he still teaches with the same enthusiasm and spark as when he started. Mr. Zeik grew up in St. Louis and is the second oldest of eleven kids. After meeting his wife, Estela, the couple moved to Naples, Florida for work. Several kids and a move to California later, they finally made their way to Texas. Being an equal distance away from family in Mexico and St. Louis makes Dallas the perfect home for their family during this chapter of life. While at the <a href="http://www.cmfp.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Catholic Men&#8217;s Fellowship of Phoenix Conference</a> this past weekend, we were able to sit down with Bishop Olmsted to talk about his new <a href="http://www.ncregister.com/images/documents/DEC_12_ENGLISH_FINAL_CompletemyJoy.pdf?_ga=2.72147920.236494248.1549395572-1852606167.1549395572" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apostolic Exhortation</a>, &#8220;Complete My Joy&#8221;.
In 2015, Bishop Olmsted wrote <a href="https://intothebreach.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/INTO-THE-BREACH-ROMAN-CATHOLIC-DIOCESE-OF-PHOENIX.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;Into the Breach&#8221;</a> an Apostolic Exhortation to Catholic men and masculinity that has been a popular read all across the globe and has now been officially translated in 11 different languages.
The title &#8220;Complete My Joy&#8221; is taken from Philippians [1:27]-2:2:
<blockquote>“Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well— since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.  If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”  (Philippians [1:27]-2:2, RSV)</blockquote>
The document urges fathers and mothers to commit themselves and their families to a deeper relationship with Christ. &#8220;Fathers and mothers have the ability and responsibility to lead their families to holiness,&#8221; said Bishop Olmsted. &#8220;When I consider the blessings that God has bestowed on me in my life, second only to my Baptism into Christ&#8217;s family is the blessing of being raised in a faithful and united Catholic family. My parents, Patrick and Helen, committed themselves to God in the vocation to Holy Matrimony, and this provided stability for me to grow as their son and as a son of God.&#8221;
Bishop Olmsted released the apostolic exhortation on the Feast of the Holy Family, December 30th, 2018.

Complete My Joy: Bishop Thomas Olmsted

He spent 16 years as a coach in the National Football League, working as a special teams coach for the Houston Texans and the Atlanta Falcons, and, in between, as an offensive assistant coach with the Detroit Lions. His years in the NFL included going to Super Bowl LI in February 2017 with Atlanta. He also coached in the college ranks, at the University of Kansas, the University of Pittsburgh, and at his alma mater, Louisiana Tech University, which he had attended on a football scholarship. He had played both football and basketball back in high school and coaches high school football present day.

He is a pro basketball player competing in Israel in the Basketball Champions League for a team called Hapoel Holon B.C. He has also played for teams in Denmark, the Czech Republic, France, and Spain, after having played at both the University of Wyoming and Central Wyoming College. In his final season with the University of Wyoming he earned a number of honors and was profiled in the USA Today. After college he played for the Denver Nuggets’ NBA Summer League team.  He had enjoyed a successful career as high school basketball player, culminating with being named First Team All-Continental League as a senior.

Father Kapaun was a Catholic priest and Army Chaplain who served in the farming communities of Kansas, and on the battlefields and in the prison camps of Korea until his eventual death. Awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013, he is a model of manhood for all of us who strive to live a life of virtue.
