Also, it's a timely topic, since John Henry Newman will be canonized in just a couple weeks, on October 13. Bishop Barron will be attending the canonization, then a few days later will deliver a talk at Oxford University on "John Henry Newman and the New Evangelization." Most people acknowledge that humility is a good thing – something that we should desire.  But most leaders struggle to find how humility can be incorporated into their leadership.  Afterall, don’t we need to be assertive?  Controlling?  In Charge?  It would seem that if I am a leader and I am humble that I am weak and incapable of providing the vision and the drive necessary for my people.  But this is not the case.  In the third chapter of St. Paul’s letter to Titus we see that God’s vision for humility is a powerful one.  In all the books of the bible we find God’s wisdom

Richard G. DeClue, Jr., S.Th.D. is the Professor of Theology at the Word on Fire Institute. In addition to his undergraduate degree in theology (Belmont Abbey College), he earned three ecclesiastical degrees in theology at the Catholic University of America. He specializes in systematic theology with a particular interest and expertise in the thought of Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. His STL thesis treated Ratzinger's Eucharistic ecclesiology in comparison to the Eastern Orthodox theologian John Zizioulas. His doctoral dissertation expounded and evaluated Ratzinger's theology of divine revelation. Dr. DeClue has published articles in peer-reviewed journals on Ratzinger's theology, and he taught a college course on the thought of Pope Benedict XVI. He is also interested in the ecclesiology of Henri de Lubac, the debate over nature and grace, and developing a rapprochement between Communio (ressourcement) theology and Thomism. WOF 446: Five Animating Sensibilities for Evangelization

In the ascent towards holiness and happiness, a Catholic man must build the good habits (Virtue, from the Latin, vir, meaning “manliness, moral strength, goodness, valor”) of the moral life and break the bad habits (Vice, from the Latin, vitium, meaning “defect, offense, blemish, imperfection”) which cause him to fall into sin and risk losing his salvation.
