The Apostle touches on four characteristics of true joy; First, it must be right, this happens when it concerns the proper good of man, which is not something created, but God: “But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge” (Ps. 73:28). Therefore, it is right, when there is joy in the Lord; hence he says, in the Lord: “‘Me joy of the Lord is your strength” (Neh.,8:10). Secondly, it is continuous; hence he says, always, “Rejoice always” (1 Thess. 5:16). This happens when it is not interrupted by sin, for then it is continuous. But sometimes it is interrupted by temporal sadness, which signifies the imperfection of joy. For when a person rejoices perfectly, his joy is not interrupted, because he cares little about things that do not last; that is why he says always. Thirdly, it should be multiple, for if you rejoice in God, you will rejoice in His incarnation: I bring you good news of a great joy, which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior” (Lk. 2: 10); and in your own activity: “When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous” (Prov. 21:15); and in your contemplation: “Companionship with her has no bitterness” (Wis. 8:16). Again, if you rejoice in your good, you will be prepared to rejoice in the good of others; if you rejoice in the present, you are prepared to rejoice in the future; hence he says, again I will say, rejoice. Fourthly, it should be moderate and not flooded with pleasures, as happens in worldly joy; hence he says, let all men know your forbearance. As if to say: Your joy should be so moderated that it will not degenerate into dissoluteness: “The people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary” (Judith 16:20). He says, let all men know, as if to say: Your life should be so moderate in externals, that it offends the gaze of no one; for that would hinder your manner of life.

Appetites and Temperance with Fr. Aquinas Guilbeau

Welcome to the first day of Restored Vows. We hope and pray that this is another step towards restoration in your marriage.

This is a two-week challenge. It’s designed to help get you thinking deeply about your past and how that impacts current porn use, as well as how your behaviors affect each other. This is not instant healing. In fact, depending on the state of your marriage, this may just be the beginning of a very long journey. But we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Your guides for this journey will be Covenant Eyes employee Brandon Clark and his wife Tonia. They are an ordinary couple who went through years of marital struggles while Brandon used, and eventually recovered from, pornography. Throughout the next two weeks, they’ll share their story and encourage you to talk through their struggles and healing so that you can apply it to your own marriage.

Brandon was exposed to pornography as a child. When he learned as a teenager that pornography use was a sin, he tried to quit but was never successful for long. It even led to him acting out sexually after college .

Brandon and Tonia met in college, though it took them a few years to start dating. By that point, Brandon already had a bit of a bad reputation, so early in their relationship, Tonia asked him point-blank if he watched porn. He said yes, so she decided that as long as he was honest, she could work with his porn use. She didn’t realize until they were already married that she was wrong. She couldn’t replace porn in his life no matter how hard she tried.

Their marriage was difficult for several years. They fought over porn; they fought over money. They struggled with infertility, which deeply grieved Tonia in particular; if she couldn’t have a good marriage, she at least wanted to pour her life into children. Brandon periodically took steps towards sobriety, and their marriage usually improved while he was sober, but he never dug into the roots of his porn or really applied his faith to the problem, so sobriety never lasted long. Eventually, after Tonia sought out counseling for herself, they attended a retreat for couples like them. That retreat helped Brandon understand the depths of his sin and the pain that lay beneath it. Once Brandon had a deeper understanding, he was able to apply the lessons he learned to truly find healing and restoration, and Brandon and Tonia finally have the marriage they dreamed of.

This is an oversimplification of their story, of course. Brandon and Tonia will go into depth during the next two weeks. But we wanted you to have an overview of their story. At points, parts of your journey will sound very similar. At other points, they may be wildly different. Regardless, they’ll use their story to help apply practical advice to your marriage.

Each day we’ll provide some questions or ideas for you to talk through together. We encourage you to be raw and vulnerable and listen well. (That means not interrupting each other to react or defend yourself.)

Today, we want you to do three things:

1) Commit to this series. Commit to being honest and listening well. Commit to being caring and understanding to the best of your ability. And commit to asking Jesus daily for His help.

2) Read Psalm 139 out loud together and reflect on it. The Psalmist says that God knows everything about us and begs for help against his enemies—in your case, porn. Not each other. The enemy is porn. Take comfort in the fact that God knows your story.

Day 1: Meet Brandon and Tonia

The Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at the University of Dallas, which is a Catholic institution. Prior to his current position he had spent a year-and-a-half working as the Program and Events Manager with Chicago Area Runners Association. He has a wealth of coaching experience that includes collegiate, high school, youth club, and adult levels for cross country and track and field. Overall, he has coached 25 USTFCCCA All-Americans, nine NJCAA All-Americans, and two Northern Athletics Conference All-Conference athletes. A Military Veteran with high honors, as an athlete he competed for the All-Navy track and field team. Plus, while he was not on duty, he competed as a sprinter/mid-distance athlete, at various NCAA college meets and open meets. He has competed in over 100 road races including nine marathons and one ultramarathon.

He has been coaching high school basketball for 15 years, including ten as Varsity Head Coach at La Salle Academy, an all-male private, independent college preparatory Catholic school in New York City, where he also serves as the Athletic Director. Have you ever felt like you were in a box?   Like no matter what you chose in life there were already predetermined outcomes and there’s nothing you could do that could change it?  Few things will kill the heart and ability of a leader more quickly than fatalism.  An attitude that says it’s not even worth trying because you won’t make any difference. Funny thing is, we’re not the first people to face fatalism.  We’re not the first people to face the boxes that life presents to us.  True leaders find a way to become creative anyway and Christian leaders become creative with Christ.  Let’s look at St. Paul as an example.

Spokane Bishop Thomas Daly is urging Catholic voters in Washington state to oppose a proposed law that would order priests to violate the seal of confession in cases where child abuse is revealed during the sacrament. 
The bill, proposed in both houses of the state Legislature, would amend state law to require clergy to report instances of child abuse with no exemption for instances where the abuse is learned during the sacrament of penance.
