Spirituality on a Pilgrimage with Fr. Stuart Crevcoure

In a recent article for The Atlantic, David Brooks claims <a href= "https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/03/the-nuclear-family-was-a-mistake/605536/">“The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake.”</a> He contends that the model of a married couple with 2.5 kids was an anomaly in the 1950s and 1960s, and that this nuclear family model is no longer working for many Americans, especially those who are less privileged. To address this family crisis, Brooks argues we need to break out of the nuclear-family-is-best mindset and “thicken and broaden” family relationships by incorporating extended families and “families of choice” (e.g., friends, co-religionists, and other voluntary groups living together) as better ways to raise children. Masculinity has to do with who we are as men as adopted sons of God. Either a man is being masculine, or he's being childish.  What makes a man masculine is the virtues.  When we act the way we are created to act and do the best we can, we are able to love - which is, "to will the good of the other."  Dave and Drew discuss what is love and what is chastity really all about? The world says being a man means taking as much as possible for ourselves.  But that's not what Jesus showed us on the Cross!  Do you want to find yourself, then give yourself!  "With virtue, we can fight the little tendencies we have, but it can also fight the big vices."  The opposite of virtue is vice. Whatever the struggle is, name it and then find the virtue that is the opposite.  

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines virtue in paragraph 1803 as: “The habitual and firm disposition to do the good, which allows a man not only to perform good acts but to give the best of himself.”

Then, using the three great transcendentals—the good, the true, and the beautiful—as his framework, he proposes ways to break through the buffered self and to open the restless heart to a consideration of God and the things of God. You’ve heard me talk about Exodus 90 — but let me tell you about Exodus Lent: a 40-day journey that will challenge you to dig a little deeper this year.

If your first reaction is: “I’m absolutely not taking cold showers” well you’re in luck: men who take on the Exodus Lent get to take warm showers, drink alcohol, and — when you’re with others — watch TV and sports. But don’t be fooled, this will still be a challenging 40 days of preparation for living the Christian life, for the rest of your life.

First — Over the 40 days of Lent, men commit to daily prayer, setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes to spend with the Lord. Each day includes a scripture reading and reflection written to help men better understand, grow in, and live virtue.

St. Luke’s telling of the Christmas story, which is read at Midnight Masses all over the Catholic world, commences by invoking the first-century’s most powerful man: “In those days Caesar Augustus published a decree ordering a census of the whole world.” Then the story continues by introducing a new King, one born in straw poverty, wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a feeding trough. This is the poetry by which God enters into our world, not as a tyrant surrounded by powers of earthly violence but as a fragile baby surrounded by an army of heavenly angels set to usher him to the cross. WOF 228: The Quest for the Historical Jesus

In the ascent towards holiness and happiness, a Catholic man must build the good habits (Virtue, from the Latin, vir, meaning “manliness, moral strength, goodness, valor”) of the moral life and break the bad habits (Vice, from the Latin, vitium, meaning “defect, offense, blemish, imperfection”) which cause him to fall into sin and risk losing his salvation. Jason also served as Secretariat Leader of Evangelization and Parish for the Diocese of Toledo and was the founder of Catholic Youth Summer Camp.Over the last two decades, Jason’s work has primarily focused on creating and renewing Catholic apostolates and organizations, infusing in them a new passion and growth mindset necessary to lead more people to Christ and His Church. Jason holds a BA in education from Miami University of Ohio, an MA in Theology from the Pontifical College Josephinum with an emphasis in the New Evangelization, and an MA in nonprofit administration from Mendoza College of Business of the University of Notre Dame. He also holds a certificate in Fundraising Management from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University.Jason serves as a consultant on the Committee of Religious Liberty for the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops.
