Dr. Ben Akers is the Executive Director of FORMED.org, a streaming platform providing trustworthy and inspiring Catholic video, audio, and eBook content from the Augustine Institute, Ignatius Press, and more than 100 other partners, helping parishes, families, and individuals explore their faith anywhere. He is also an Associate Professor of Theology at the Augustine Institute Graduate School. 

He previously served as Director of the Denver Catholic Biblical School and Catechetical School in the Archdiocese of Denver helping grow it into the largest and most comprehensive diocesan Bible study program in the United States. He received his doctorate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy where he studied for five years while also directing an undergraduate study abroad program with his wife. About the Topic:

Acquired: Virtue that we cultivate by our own efforts. Acquired virtues can be strengthened progressively over time. Aquinas holds that acquired virtue can be a life of continuous growth and progress.

Infused: Given by God alone. Habitual grace is the accidental form that modifies the essence of the soul so as to give the human person a participation in the divine nature. Infused virtues can also grow over time.

Stages of growth:
<ol>
 	<li>Beginner – avoiding sin and preserving the gift of charity.</li>
 	<li>Proficient – Strengthen charity by steadily advancing in greater works</li>
 	<li>Perfect – Whose exercise of charity is directed at uion with and enjoyment of God</li>
</ol> 
The strengthening of a habit enables one to perform greater acts in accordance with that virtue the 1. Promptness 2. Pleasure 3. Ease.

Acquired virtues are both generated and increased by gradual strengthening of reason’s imprint on the appetitive powers through human acts, but “our acts are not the active causes of the increase of charity and the other infused virtues,” just as our actions are not the active causes of infused virtues’ coming to be in the first place. The increase of the infused virtues is due to God’s action, just as their initial infusion is God’s gift.

How Every Man Should Lead The Spirituality of His Family

St Thomas Aquinas, in the first part of his Summa Theologica, after having enumerated five proofs for the existence of God, proceeds to outline and explicate his attributes, of which Thomas says He has eight: 1) Simplicity, 2) perfection, 3) goodness, 4) infinity, 5) ubiquity, 6) immutability, 7) eternity, and 8) unity. This is the order in which he deals with them and I thought I would provide a quick summary of each in the same order for those that are interested. To read what Thomas himself says, start here in the Summa. 1. THE SIMPLICITY OF GOD. The Simplicity of God means that God has no parts, that He is not composed in any way. He is not, as we are, the composition of body and soul, nor is He the composition of essence and existence. One of Thomas' arguments for why God is not a composition of body and soul is the following: 1. Bodies, by necessity, move. 2. God is the unmoved mover. 3. Therefore God does not have a body (this may be the quickest refutation of Mormonism ever!). Nor is God a composition of essence (what a thing is) and existence (that a thing is). Rather, in God, essence and existence are the same thing. We see Biblical evidence of this in the book of Exodus where God responds to Moses' request for a name, "I am who I am" (3:14). If essence and existence were not the same in God, if what he was was not the same thing as that he was, then there would exist outside of God the reason for his existence, which is absurd. 2. THE PERFECTION OF GOD The perfection of God means that God lacks nothing. He is the the fullness of being. As St. Thomas says, "to be the first principle for others it is necessary to be maximally in act, and as such the most perfect being." The more a being is like God, the more perfect it is. The fact that we can even say that one being is more perfect than another implies a most perfect being, and this, of course, is the crux of Thomas' fourth proof for the existence of God. 3. THE GOODNESS OF GOD God, who is the greatest conceivable being, is also goodness itself, since being and goodness are really convertible. A being, in so far as it is like God, is good, and a being, in so far as it is unlike God, is not. Given that all creation is ordered to this good, one might reasonably ask, "If all creation is ordered toward the supreme good, who is God, to what good may we say that God is ordered? To none other than the supreme good who is himself. The only appropriate finality for an infinite being is infinite being." 4. THE INFINITY OF GOD The infinity of God refers to the fact that God is in no way limited. He is Subsistent being itself. "God is," in the words of D.Q. McInerny, "without limits because He is Himself the inexhaustible source of all the riches of being. 5. THE UBIQUITY OF GOD The ubiquity of God means that God is everywhere. Not that God has a body and is "in" each and every place—God is not inside of my glass of milk in the sense that he has extension in space. Rather, what we mean when we say God is everywhere—including my glass of milk—is this: "wherever something is operating, there it is." Since God is operating everywhere, he is everywhere. The sentiment "God is closer to you than you are to yourself," is not just a feel-good sentiment, it's true. 6. THE IMMUTABILITY OF GOD The sixth attribute put forward by Aquinas is His immutability, that is, his unchangeableness. If a thing changes it changes for better or for worse. If God was mutable, therefore, his changing would make him better or worse. If it made him better then he wasn't perfect to begin with. If it made him worse, then he isn't perfect now. 7. THE ETERNITY OF GOD The philosopher Boethius, in The Consolation of Philosophy defines eternity thusly: "Eternity is the everlasting, totally simultaneous and perfect possession of life." And this is the definition St. Thomas adopts when speaking of God's eternity. God is eternal because he immutable. "If we are right in describing time as the measure of motion," writes, McInerny, "we are equally right in describing eternity as the measure of permanence." 8. THE UNITY OF GOD Unity, like goodness, and beauty, is a transcendental of being. It is because God is being that he issimple that he is perfect unity. St. Thomas writes, "that which is simple, is undivided both with respect to act and potency." And since it is not possible to divide God in any way (matter/form; essence/existence, etc.), then it follows that God is perfect in unity. --- Quotes from D. Let’s face it, work is hard, and a lot of people would prefer not to work if they didn’t have to.  What would a world look like where people no longer worked?  People no longer owned things?  Wouldn’t it be better or in fact could it be really worse?  Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Rerum Novarum explores this asking the question about the link between work and dignity.  It becomes a practical question for each one of us.

It has been said that human society can be divided into those who have and those who have not.  For many this opposition is the source of a lot of contention and fighting.  But does it have to be this way?  In his encyclical, “Rerum Novarum”, Pope Leo XIII uses this very question as an opportunity to present an attractive proposition of the Gospel.  In fact, Christians need to fill the space of possessions, talents, needs, and wants with Jesus Christ.  This is the role of the Catholic leader.

Hey! Today I chat with Emily Sullivan about the marital debt! And no, we're not talking about money. ... Do not listen if you have kids around. Here's a little of what Aquinas had to say about the marital debt. Click the link below to get the full context: On the contrary, As the slave is in the power of his master, so is one spouse in the power of the other (1 Corinthians 7:4). But a slave is bound by an obligation of precept to pay his master the debt of his service according to Romans 13:7, "Render . . . to all men their dues, tribute to whom tribute is due," etc. Therefore husband and wife are mutually bound to the payment of the marriage debt. Further, marriage is directed to the avoiding of fornication (1 Corinthians 7:2). But this could not be the effect of marriage, if the one were not bound to pay the debt to the other when the latter is troubled with concupiscence. Therefore the payment of the debt is an obligation of precept. I answer that, Marriage was instituted especially as fulfilling an office of nature. Wherefore in its act the movement of nature must be observed according to which the nutritive power administers to the generative power that alone which is in excess of what is required for the preservation of the individual: for the natural order requires that a thing should be first perfected in itself, and that afterwards it should communicate of its perfection to others: and this is also the order of charity which perfects nature. And therefore, since the wife has power over her husband only in relation to the generative power and not in relation to things directed to the preservation of the individual, the husband is bound to pay the debt to his wife, in matters pertaining to the begetting of children, with due regard however to his own welfare. Is there a wrong way to accept a compliment?

Article 2. Whether it is lawful to kill sinners? Objection 1. It would seem unlawful to kill men who have sinned. For our Lord in the parable (Matthew 13) forbade the uprooting of the cockle which denotes wicked men according to a gloss. Now whatever is forbidden by God is a sin. Therefore it is a sin to kill a sinner. Objection 2. Further, human justice is conformed to Divine justice. Now according to Divine justice sinners are kept back for repentance, according to Ezekiel 33:11, "I desire not the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live." Therefore it seems altogether unjust to kill sinners. Objection 3. Further, it is not lawful, for any good end whatever, to do that which is evil in itself, according to Augustine(Contra Mendac. vii) and the Philosopher (Ethic. ii, 6). Now to kill a man is evil in itself, since we are bound to havecharity towards all men, and "we wish our friends to live and to exist," according to Ethic. ix, 4. Therefore it is nowise lawful to kill a man who has sinned. On the contrary, It is written (Exodus 22:18): "Wizards thou shalt not suffer to live"; and (Psalm 100:8): "In the morning I put to death all the wicked of the land." I answer that, As stated above (Article 1), it is lawful to kill dumb animals, in so far as they are naturally directed toman's use, as the imperfect is directed to the perfect. Now every part is directed to the whole, as imperfect to perfect, wherefore every part is naturally for the sake of the whole. For this reason we observe that if the health of the whole body demands the excision of a member, through its being decayed or infectious to the other members, it will be both praiseworthy and advantageous to have it cut away. Now every individual person is compared to the whole community, as part to whole. Therefore if a man be dangerous and infectious to the community, on account of some sin, it is praiseworthy and advantageous that he be killed in order to safeguard the common good, since "a little leaven corrupteth the whole lump" (1 Corinthians 5:6). Reply to Objection 1. Our Lord commanded them to forbear from uprooting the cockle in order to spare the wheat, i.e. the good. This occurs when the wicked cannot be slain without the good being killed with them, either because thewicked lie hidden among the good, or because they have many followers, so that they cannot be killed without danger to the good, as Augustine says (Contra Parmen. iii, 2). Wherefore our Lord teaches that we should rather allow the wickedto live, and that vengeance is to be delayed until the last judgment, rather than that the good be put to death together with the wicked. When, however, the good incur no danger, but rather are protected and saved by the slaying of thewicked, then the latter may be lawfully put to death. Reply to Objection 2. According to the order of His wisdom, God sometimes slays sinners forthwith in order to deliver the good, whereas sometimes He allows them time to repent, according as He knows what is expedient for His elect. This also does human justice imitate according to its powers; for it puts to death those who are dangerous to others, while it allows time for repentance to those who sin without grievously harming others. Reply to Objection 3. By sinning man departs from the order of reason, and consequently falls away from the dignity of his manhood, in so far as he is naturally free, and exists for himself, and he falls into the slavish state of the beasts, by being disposed of according as he is useful to others. This is expressed in Psalm 48:21: "Man, when he was in honor, did not understand; he hath been compared to senseless beasts, and made like to them," and Proverbs 11:29: "The fool shall serve the wise." Hence, although it be evil in itself to kill a man so long as he preserve his dignity, yet it may begood to kill a man who has sinned, even as it is to kill a beast. Most people acknowledge that humility is a good thing – something that we should desire.  But most leaders struggle to find how humility can be incorporated into their leadership.  Afterall, don’t we need to be assertive?  Controlling?  In Charge?  It would seem that if I am a leader and I am humble that I am weak and incapable of providing the vision and the drive necessary for my people.  But this is not the case.  In the third chapter of St. Paul’s letter to Titus we see that God’s vision for humility is a powerful one.  In all the books of the bible we find God’s wisdom

Today I discuss what prayer is, three obstacles I experience when praying, how to develop a prayer rule of life, and 3 reasons Aquinas says we should pray out loud. And yet the voice is employed in such like prayers for three reasons. First, in order to excite interior devotion, whereby the mind of the person praying is raised to God, because by means of external signs, whether of words or of deeds, the human mind is moved as regards apprehension, and consequently also as regards the affections. Hence Augustine says (ad Probam. Ep. cxxx, 9) that "by means of words and other signs we arouse ourselves more effectively to an increase of holy desires." Hence then alone should we use words and such like signs when they help to excite the mind internally. But if they distract or in any way impede the mind we should abstain from them; and this happens chiefly to those whose mind is sufficiently prepared for devotion without having recourse to those signs. Wherefore the Psalmist (Psalm 26:8) said: "My heart hath said to Thee: 'My face hath sought Thee,'" and we read of Anna (1 Samuel 1:13) that "she spoke in her heart." Secondly, the voice is used in praying as though to pay a debt, so that man may serve God with all that he has from God, that is to say, not only with his mind, but also with his body: and this applies to prayer considered especially as satisfactory. Hence it is written (Hosea 14:3): "Take away all iniquity, and receive the good: and we will render the calves of our lips." 173: What is prayer? (& How to do it)

Today Victor and I are talking about the process of waiting from a Christian perspective. Throughout the Bible, waiting has been a central theme.

What is all this waiting about? While we often see waiting as something annoying, we should be seeing it as an opportunity to better prepare ourselves for what we ultimately anticipate: the Second Coming of Christ.

In this episode we learn that:
 - Waiting is a gift given to us by God.
 - In the Bible, God uses periods of waiting to strengthen people’s wisdom so they can better accept His call.
 - Once we see our lives as a process of waiting for the Second Coming, we can focus on constant preparation for living in paradise with Him.
