Why Most People Fail at Self-Mastery (And How to Change That)

In this episode,  Fr. Dom and James begin part 1 of their 5 part series on "Into the Breach," an apostolic exhortation issued by Bishop Thomas Olmsted in Phoenix in 2015. Bishop Olmsted came out throwing haymakers stating that men have failed in society which has led to chaos, disruption, and disappointment. For too long men have forsaken their duties and allowed Satan to penetrate the walls and create a breach in our defenses. Although this sounds like the makings of an epic novel, you will have to settle for James and Father Dom's take on the matter.  Fr. Dom begins his modus operandi on Adam failing to defend the garden and allowing the serpent to enter. James quotes Shakespeare and somehow ties it into the military.  James quotes stats that should leave all men preparing for the spiritual battle to defeat Satan. And so much more! Objection 1. It would seem that the saints in heaven do not pray for us. A man's action is more meritorious for himself than for others. But the saints in heaven do not merit for themselves, neither do they pray for themselves, since they are already established in the term. Neither therefore do they pray for us. Objection 2. Further, the saints conform their will to God perfectly, so that they will only what God wills. Now what God wills is always fulfilled. Therefore it would be useless for the saints to pray for us. Objection 3. Further, just as the saints in heaven are above, so are those in Purgatory, for they can no longer sin. Now those in Purgatory do not pray for us, on the contrary we pray for them. Therefore neither do the saints in heaven pray for us. Objection 4. Further, if the saints in heaven pray for us, the prayers of the higher saints would be more efficacious; and so we ought not to implore the help of the lower saints' prayers but only of those of the higher saints. Objection 5. Further, the soul of Peter is not Peter. If therefore the souls of the saints pray for us, so long as they are separated from their bodies, we ought not to call upon Saint Peter, but on his soul, to pray for us: yet the Church does the contrary. The saints therefore do not pray for us, at least before the resurrection. On the contrary, It is written (2 Maccabees 15:14): "This is . . . he that prayeth much for the people, and for all the holy city, Jeremias the prophet of God." I answer that, As Jerome says (Cont. Vigilant. 6), the error of Vigilantius consisted in saying that "while we live, we can pray one for another; but that after we are dead, none of our prayers for others can be heard, seeing that not even the martyrs' prayers are granted when they pray for their blood to be avenged." But this is absolutely false, because, since prayers offered for others proceed from charity, as stated above (Articles 7 and 8), the greater the charity of the saints in heaven, the more they pray for wayfarers, since the latter can be helped by prayers: and the more closely they are united to God, the more are their prayers efficacious: for the Divine order is such that lower beings receive an overflow of the excellence of the higher, even as the air receives the brightness of the sun. Wherefore it is said of Christ (Hebrews 7:25): "Going to God by His own power . . . to make intercession for us" [Vulgate: 'He is able to save for ever them that come to God by Him, always living to make intercession for us.']. Hence Jerome says (Cont. Vigilant. 6): "If the apostles and martyrs while yet in the body and having to be solicitous for themselves, can pray for others, how much more now that they have the crown of victory and triumph." Reply to Objection 1. The saints in heaven, since they are blessed, have no lack of bliss, save that of the body's glory, and for this they pray. But they pray for us who lack the ultimate perfection of bliss: and their prayers are efficacious in impetrating through their previous merits and through God's acceptance. Reply to Objection 2. The saints impetrate what ever God wishes to take place through their prayers: and they pray for that which they deem will be granted through their prayers according to God's will. Reply to Objection 3. Those who are in Purgatory though they are above us on account of their impeccability, yet they are below us as to the pains which they suffer: and in this respect they are not in a condition to pray, but rather in a condition that requires us to pray for them. Reply to Objection 4. It is God's will that inferior beings should be helped by all those that are above them, wherefore we ought to pray not only to the higher but also to the lower saints; else we should have to implore the mercy of God alone. Nevertheless it happens sometime that prayers addressed to a saint of lower degree are more efficacious, either because he is implored with greater devotion, or because God wishes to make known his sanctity. Reply to Objection 5. John Michael Lucido is a regional director at FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), where he and his wife serve the Lord by accompanying others, including fellow missionaries. John Michael shares how he tried to find acceptance in the wrong places as he started college and soon had to take a step back to reset his priorities and put God back at the forefront. He reflects on the powerful legacy of great Catholic men who came before him and how we are all standing on the shoulders of the men and women who carved this path for us. It's lonely at the top.  How many times have we made that statement about our own situation as a leader or had other people remind us about that truth?  It almost makes us ask the question about whether Jesus ever felt lonely and it begs the question as to how he prepared his apostles for the solitude that would be a part of their life as a leader of the church.  When we look back at hos Christ prepared the apostles, he showed them what to do with loneliness.  He taught them to transform it into the seabed of communion.

The guys begin with one last round of sports heartbreak (Notre Dame, Broncos, and a Buccaneers game that hasn’t quite happened yet), plus Deacon Bob’s double-dose weekend of Weird Al concerts.  
Then they shift to reflect on the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk. They wrestle with grief and division, recognizing how fragile life feels, and wonder aloud how silencing faith-filled voices only deepens the darkness. Their reflection reminds listeners that vengeance belongs to the Lord, and that true hope is found in forgiveness, mercy, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Catholicism, Tattoos, & Getting Banned From Australia (Shayne Smith) | Ep. 545

Having just finished his studies at Xavier in New Orleans, Pradeep Thoppil started working at Tulane Medical Center shortly before Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. As a first-year pharmacist, he was eager to help the team and volunteered to join the pre-hurricane team. He had no idea that when he entered the hospital that day, he would not leave until six and a half days later.Pradeep, a self-proclaimed weather nerd, shares when he realized that Katrina had made a turn and headed straight for New Orleans. What happened next is a wild tale of triumphs, trials, and the heroic efforts of the team inside the medical center. Pradeep’s recounting of the race against time includes flooding, the quick decision to move medications to higher floors, praying for people outside the hospital windows after the doors had to be locked for safety, the loss of power, water, and their food supply, creating and protecting a makeshift pharmacy, relocating patients into hallways as the storm’s pressure made the walls breath and windows break, and eventually moving patients up many flights of stairs and out to the parking garage for rooftop evacuation. At one point, Pradeep considered leaving the hospital to meet his parents, which led to an honest conversation with God in which Pradeep realized he was being called to stay for the long haul. Despite the trials that ensued, Pradeep knew he had made the right decision. Sharing this story with The BeatiDudes was not easy for Pradeep, as it brings back many deep and difficult emotions. Isolation to Community: Fellowship in Ministry to Men with Dcn Jim Grevenites

Fr. Kevin Kolker, the youngest of four siblings, including The BeatiDude's very own Paul Kolker, serves as the Parochial Vicar at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas. This episode covers the arch of Fr. Kevin’s life journey to the priesthood. Fr. Kevin grew up in Coppell, Texas, and attended St. Ann Catholic Parish. He went to school at St. Luke in Irving before entering high school at Jesuit Dallas, where he learned about being a man for others and doing all things for the great glory of God. He attended Texas A&amp;M University, where he received degrees in both Mathematics and Philosophy before a short stint in corporate America. Despite his efforts to run from the Lord’s call, Fr. Ep 74 - Fear: A Catholic Response and Reflection

In the ascent towards holiness and happiness, a Catholic man must build the good habits (Virtue, from the Latin, vir, meaning “manliness, moral strength, goodness, valor”) of the moral life and break the bad habits (Vice, from the Latin, vitium, meaning “defect, offense, blemish, imperfection”) which cause him to fall into sin and risk losing his salvation.
