The reality of death confronts our Lord as he nears the end of his earthly journey. In the death of their brother Lazarus, with all of its pain and sense of loss, Martha and Mary experience a preview of Christ's redeeming sacrifice that He offered for us. Jesus teaches us today that we exist not to avoid suffering that is meaningless, but to find meaning in the suffering that is unavoidable.
