WOF 207: Christ the King

Victor and I are diving into something really close to my heart—what Advent is truly about. It’s so easy to let this season slip by in the rush to Christmas, but Advent is such a gift if we really lean in. It’s not just about lighting candles or decorating—it’s about inviting Christ into the deepest parts of our lives.

We talk about how Advent challenges us to open the doors we’ve kept locked for far too long—the places of shame, hurt, and brokenness. Jesus came into the world as a baby, humble and vulnerable, and He’s waiting to come into our hearts in the same way.

In this episode, we break open scriptures like John 1 ("The Word became flesh"), Isaiah 61 ("He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted"), and Philippians 2 ("He emptied himself...") to explore why Christ came and how we can prepare ourselves to welcome Him fully. We also share personal stories about letting Jesus into the messiness of our lives and what happens when we do.

I’m praying this episode inspires you to make this Advent more than just a countdown to Christmas. Let’s prepare our hearts, invite Him in, and let His light shine in our darkest places.

Advent: Preparing the Way of the Lord

She skied in the Winter Olympics in 2006 in Torino (Italy) and is a world champion, being a multi-sport athlete. Among other topics, she discusses peer pressure she had to stay away from in her late teens relative to partying, the deeper she moved into her skiing pursuits and faith commitment. She is also a mother of five children with her sixth on the way. She mentions having recently moved to Idaho and a 55-acre site where they hope to host Catholic families to be renewed in recreation and faith ("learn to pray and play again").

WOF 323: Reading Scripture with the Early Church Fathers

He has a miraculous health-related story. On the sports side, he played football in high school and college, including in the Glenwood Football League and training camp with the New York Jets' farm team. During his first two years he became the best table tennis player in college. As a Pulmonary Fellow at Mass General Hospital, he worked with some of the world-class runners competing from the Boston Marathon. He is the author of a novel called, "A Man Like You and Me: A Supernatural Adventure Story," whose purpose, he says, is to increase faith in God in the reader, and is about supernatural events that started in his life in 1982.

Ep 91 | Degenerates Are Closer To God Than Those Who Just Don't Care w/ David Calavitta

He is an outfielder with the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League, which is a Professional Partner League of Major League Baseball. Last year in 78 games played he batted .300 and had a .995 fielding percentage. After playing collegiately at the University of Minnesota-Duluth he went on to play double A ball with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association. He had started his college career at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He also trains youth baseball players at a local facility. On the faith side he has a reversion story that he shares during this interview.

He was a nationally ranked All-Ivy League wrestler at the University of Pennsylvania AND he was an assistant wrestling coach at Springfield College. He is a certified School Psychologist, Personal Trainer and Nutritionist, and, along with his brother he now runs Wrestling Mindset, to help wrestlers reach their full potential in wrestling, school and life. He has two master's degrees, including one in Sports Psychology, and his master's degree thesis has been published in the International Journal of Wrestling Sciences. On the faith side, he is the founder of Spiritual Strength, whose aim is "building the total athlete for Christ." And his book, "Spiritual Strength: Building the Total Athlete for Christ," was reviewed and endorsed by Cardinal Burke.

Poverty is not only a complex problem to address economically–not to mention sociologically, psychologically, and culturally; it is also often caught up in political and ideological currents, both domestically and internationally, that run counter to a Catholic understanding of human dignity and the common good. So what, then, is the authentically Catholic way of caring for the poor? What does it mean to say that Catholicism has a preferential option for the poor? How, moreover, can the Church coherently both advocate for reducing poverty on the one hand while praising the embrace of voluntary poverty on the other? "[Jesus] was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil." - Luke 4:1On the day Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit anointed him. Immediately after this event the Holy Spirit led Jesus to the desert. The desert was a place of isolation, death, and defeat, but Jesus was led to the desert so that it may be forever changed into a place of grace. The Spirit led Jesus to the desert and also protected and cared for him while he was there. The desert is a part of every Christian's life but it does not have to be a place of despair or isolation. The Holy Spirit is present to life's deserts and when we experience his presence it changes our spiritual life.
