We all know that last year, I released an episode that got a lot more attention than I anticipated. I spent the majority of 2023 having conversations with fellow Catholics and Protestants about nonprofits, capitalism, and self-fundraising missionaries. 
 
I learned a lot from these conversations. I learned from many former or current missionaries. I also learned from the family members and friends (and many former friends) of missionaries. 
 
I heard some stories demonstrating the dark side of some of these models. Like any good system, it has the potential to be abused. 
 
My conversations led to a podcast, which led to me having a private meeting at FOCUS headquarters. This was fitting since they were by far the organization that was most upset by the episode. 
 
Despite invitations to come on the podcast to clear the air, I was never able to have a public conversation with anyone to help bring clarity to this topic. I recorded this episode after another year of waiting, praying, discussions, and negative experiences with *mostly* active FOCUS staff. 
 
The message of this episode is clear: many of us believe there needs to be some reform to the model of self-fundraising used by certain organizations. We may be wrong about that, but it&#39;s what we believe. Non-profits are supposed to thrive on transparency. And that is ultimately what I&#39;m requesting on behalf of the many, many fellow disaffected FOCUS supporters.

Join the Deacon's Call | Deacon James Thurman has a BA in Philosophy and Masters in Theology from Mount Angel Seminary and is the founder and organizer for the annual Holy League Northwest Catholic men’s conference. 

Ordained in October 2019 by Archbishop Alexander Sample for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, Deacon James has been serving at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Silverton, Oregon. He is a Benedictine Oblate of Mount Angel Abbey. He has served as Pastoral Associate of Catechesis and Family Life at St. Joseph’s in Salem. 

James is a U.S. Army veteran as a Abrams tanker and Field Artillery specialist; he spent three years in active duty and two years in the Washington State National Guard. He currently works as a hospice chaplain. Deacon James is a member of the Board of Directors at G. K. Chesterton Academy of the Willamette Valley. 

He is an active Knight of Columbus, and is currently serving as the Faith Director for the Knights of Columbus in Oregon. He and his wife Kathleen were married in 2009 and have three beautiful children: Isaac, Ava and Maximilian. 

Deacon James loves spending time with his family, pursuing outdoor adventures like camping and hiking, studying the faith, reading spiritual books and playing golf. When time permits, he enjoys raising a glass in the company of good friends.

He has more than 30 years of coaching experience and currently serves as a senior offensive analyst for LSU football. His coaching career includes winning a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints in 2009 and capturing the 1997 national championship with Michigan, having been a part of five Big Ten Championships with the Wolverines. Prior to coming onboard with LSU, he spent three years at Bowling Green where he served as offensive coordinator along with coaching the running backs and offensive line. That was his second stint with their program, having previously been there from 1986-1995 when he served in a variety of roles and helped them to back-to-back MAC Championships and bowl game victories in 1991 and 1992.
