WOF 376: Peter Kreeft on Socrates vs. the Sophists

In the ascent towards holiness and happiness, a Catholic man must build the good habits (Virtue, from the Latin, vir, meaning “manliness, moral strength, goodness, valor”) of the moral life and break the bad habits (Vice, from the Latin, vitium, meaning “defect, offense, blemish, imperfection”) which cause him to fall into sin and risk losing his salvation. Rob Hays, CEO of Ashford Hospitality, is a finance and business leader with two decades of experience in strategy and corporate finance. Around that same time, Rob was asked if he would move into the CEO role, which he gladly accepted after a powerful conversation with his dad. When reflecting on how he managed the stress of the situation, Rob was grateful that he had formed the habits of daily prayer, Rosaries, and mass before facing the storm. He found that he could not make it through the day if not for those spiritual habits. Bill Kula loves baseball and, more importantly, is loyal to his hometown team, the Texas Rangers. In 2016, Bill and his wife were recognized as the Texas Rangers Fans of the Year. The award brought Bill into an even deeper relationship with the team so you can imagine his excitement when the Rangers made it to the World Series in 2023.As the series began, Bill began hearing his father's voice, who had passed just a few years earlier, telling him, “Enjoy the game.” The message didn’t mean anything specific to Bill until Game 3 arrived. That day, Bill received an unsolicited direct message from Major League Baseball offering him two free tickets to the game that evening. After realizing the messages were not a hoax, Bill and his wife made their way to the stadium. Upon finding their seats, he heard his father again say, “Enjoy the game.”Bill’s father used their shared love and respect for the game of baseball to connect with him from beyond the grave. As Bill sat in his seat, still in disbelief, he realized that day was the three-year anniversary of his father’s death. He thanked his earthly father and his heavenly Father, and then enjoyed the game as the Rangers made their first-ever run to become World Series Champions. Bill is a public relations and communications executive passionate about service, faith, and lifelong learning. Presently, he serves as the Director of Communications for the Catholic Foundation in Dallas, Texas. Finding True Joy

In establishing the Church, the Lord established everything that makes that Church to be what it is.  The institution of the Sacraments by Christ is seen as a direct consequence of the institution of the Church by Christ. So, it’s not so much a direct action on one occasion by Jesus, so much as the whole action of the institution or establishment of the Church; that's what's come from Him, and then as that Church started establishing patterns or ritual behavior for itself, that is Christ instituting those Sacraments, but in an indirect fashion.  It is in this sense that we find Confirmation in the New Testament.  Talking more on this today along with Soulful Psalm 144

Authentic Friendship

There’s an old adage in Christianity that God writes straight with crooked lines.  The same can be said with many on their course to success.  A good leader needs to know how to bend and when to bend.  It’s like the old adage, “Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em.”  That ability to change course in the midst of a project we refer to as “pivoting.”  Beginning by our understanding of success and lived through our willingness to change , sometimes our ability to succeed depends upon our ability to pivot.
