Most of us are aware of the story of King David, of the way that God blessed him and of God’s eternal covenant with David.  And most of us are aware of the story of Bathsheba and David’s famous lack of chastity.  The lessons of the life of David for our spiritual lives are many and deep.  But studying his failures from Bathsheba to Absalom his son to his census of Israel teaches us a powerful lesson about God’s merciful love for his leaders.

About the Topic:
“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure  their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father whose in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus says “when you fast” not “if you fast”. He expected us to fast. But we should not fast out of dieting or pride, but out of love of God. 
Fasting improves us spiritually in several ways (from <a href="https://jimmyakin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jimmy Akin</a>):

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">We express our recognition that spiritual things are more important than physical things.</li>
 	<li class="li1">We learn to deny ourselves pleasures, even in spite of pain. (Increase in fortitude)</li>
 	<li class="li1">We declare that we recognize the need to reform and to get closer to God.</li>
 	<li class="li1">We willingly embrace the hunger fasting produces as a sign of being willing to shoulder the burdens of others (Col. 1:24 - “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is Lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church…”). What is lacking: Christ’s sufferings were, of course, sufficient for our redemption, but all of us may add ours to his, in order that the fruits of his redemption be applied to the souls of men. </li>
 	<li class="li1">We express humility before God by adopting a humble posture, recognizing our dependence on him and affirming our submissiveness to his will.</li>
</ol> 
4 classes of penitents who committed major sins (idolatry, murder, abortion, adultery) in the ancient formal penitential discipline:

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">Weepers - Not allowed in the church but stayed outside and asked those going in to pray for them.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Hearers - Stood inside the church doors and heard the liturgy of the word but were dismissed before the liturgy of the Eucharist.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Kneelers - knelt or lay down in church and participated with the Church in specific prayers for them before being blessed by the bishop and dismissed prior to the Eucharist. </li>
 	<li class="li1">Standers - sat in the congregation and stayed for the liturgy of the Eucharist but did not receive Communion.</li>
</ol> 
5 Tips when Fasting:

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">Have a specific intention for your suffering. Visualize the person you are praying for or the grace you are asking God to give you.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Set a schedule. Scheduling how your day will look helps avoid moments of inactivity. Helps to go to sleep on time and get up early.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Increase the amount of water you drink per day.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Take multi-vitamins. When you fast you will become deficient in some vitamins your body is used to having.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Don’t complain. No one should know you are fasting.</li>
</ol> 
Canon Law on Feast Days: 
Can. 1246 §1. Sunday, on which by apostolic tradition the paschal mystery is celebrated, must be observed in the universal Church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints.
Canon Law on Days of Penance: 
Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Can. 1252 The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.
Can. 1253 The conference of bishops can determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence as well as substitute other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety, in whole or in part, for abstinence and fast.

Chill Out, It’s Just Chili’s | Logan O’Brien | Episode #192

Today I chat with Dr. Robert Delfino about Thomas' 5th argument for God's existence. --- Here is the translation from the Fathers of the English Dominican Province (ST 1, Q. 2, A. 3.): "The fifth way is taken from the governance of the world. We see that things which lack intelligence, such as natural bodies, act for an end, and this is evident from their acting always, or nearly always, in the same way, so as to obtain the best result. Hence it is plain that not fortuitously, but designedly, do they achieve their end. Now whatever lacks intelligence cannot move towards an end, unless it be directed by some being endowed with knowledge and intelligence; as the arrow is shot to its mark by the archer. Therefore some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to their end; and this being we call God." Here's Delfino's translation:  The fifth way is taken from the governance of things. For we see some things that lack knowledge, namely natural bodies, act for the sake of some end. This is apparent from the fact that they always or most often act in the same way and achieve what is best [i.e., what fulfils their natural needs]. From this it is obvious that they achieve their end not by chance but by natural inclination (ex intentione). But those things that lack knowledge do not tend toward an end except under the direction of something with knowledge and intelligence, as in the case of an arrow from an archer. Therefore there is some intelligent being by whom all natural things (omnes res naturales) are ordered to an end, and this we call God. --- Defino's 10 step argument: 1. We see in nature that non-intelligent things act for a goal that is good with regularity. For example, it is in the nature of an electron to be attracted to protons, which helps to form atoms. 2. If electrons did not have this natural inclination then none of the elements on the periodic table you studied in Chemistry would form, which would mean that none of the physical life forms we know (including yourself!) would exist anywhere in the physical universe. But that would be bad, because life is good. 3. In the case of electrons being attracted to protons, we cannot ascribe such behavior to chance or to biological evolution. In the case of chance, chance would not explain why the electrons act with such regularity because chance refers to what happens rarely. 4. In the case of biological evolution, this is because the regularity of action in the case of electrons exists prior to biological evolution and is necessary in order to make biological evolution possible. 5. An intelligent cause can direct something for a goal that is good with regularity. For example, consider an archer who, with routine success, directs his arrows towards the animals he is hunting for food. However, these regular actions of the arrows, which are made of wood, do not represent the natural actions of wood. Instead, they represent something imposed on the wood of the arrows by the archer. This is similar to how a puppeteer imposes movement on a puppet, and how a watchmaker orders the part of a watch to tell time. 6. An intelligent cause is able to do this because having intelligence allows one to envision something mentally that does not yet exist physically (for example, envisioning a watch before it was invented). Non-intelligent matter cannot order itself to an end that is good precisely because it is incapable of thought. 7. However, human intelligence cannot explain why an electron has, within its own nature, an inclination to be attracted to protons because electrons exist prior to humans and humans could not exist without electrons already having these natural inclinations. 8. In our attempt to explain why electrons, as non-intelligent beings, have a natural inclination to be attracted to protons, which makes life possible, we have ruled out the material aspect of the electron, chance, biological evolution, and human intelligence. 9. Therefore, there must be some non-human intelligence that is responsible for the natural inclinations of electrons. 10. This non-human intelligence cannot achieve this by imposing activity on the electron in a manner similar to a puppeteer or a watchmaker. Instead, this non-human intelligence must be capable of endowing an electron with its being and nature. In 1960, Bill Sladek’s mom was told that she should not carry her baby to term due to her age and previous pregnancy issues. She told her doctor that “God doesn’t make mistakes” and welcomed baby Bill in June of that year. Bill’s wife, Mary, has a similar story about her heroic mom and the battle she endured to continue her pregnancy despite the health struggles she was facing at the time that led to her passing only months after Mary was born. This is a must-watch episode that reinforces the culture of life. It includes incredible stories about the mothers who made every sacrifice possible to bring Bill and Mary into the world, allowing their light to shine on many others. Early in the morning, he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

We know that St. Joseph was not present at the Cross but that doesn’t mean the Cross was not present for St. Joseph.  As a matter of fact the Cross is something that each one of us has to carry in order to enter into eternal life.  It’s the condition that our Savior laid down for true discipleship.  The Cross, present in St. Joseph, speaks to us about how God wants us to lead in the places that He has put us.
