My Peace I Give You

Does a good end justify the means taken to get there?  Our leaders authorized to do the good “no matter what” by any means necessary – even means that are wrong?  Can we judge something as being wrong when it actually produces something that is good?  These questions are central to the question of leadership and the decisions we have to make as leaders.  Our Lord in the Gospel gives and answer to these questions.  So does Saul Alinsky in Chapter 2 of his book “Rules For Radicals.”  Let’s compare the two.

He played football in high school but also competed in track, which became his long-term sport. Having broken a school record in indoor 4x800m relay in high school, he went on to compete for four years at Bradley University where he also broke a school record. Post-college he has continued to run, including five marathons and one 50-mile ultra marathon. He even qualified for and ran in the Boston Marathon.  Plus, since 2018 he has backpacked approximately five thousand miles across a handful of trails, including the Appalachian Trail.

For a lot of Catholics, Lent is a time of finding the easiest way to “give something up”. But, at the end of those 40 days, did that sacrifice really make a difference?

This year, there’s a new opportunity out there specifically for men that will actually help you grow closer to God and become a better man.

You’ve heard me talk about Exodus 90 — but let me tell you about Exodus Lent: a 40-day journey that will challenge you to dig a little deeper this year.

If your first reaction is: “I’m absolutely not taking cold showers” well you’re in luck: men who take on the Exodus Lent get to take warm showers, drink alcohol, and — when you’re with others — watch TV and sports. But don’t be fooled, this will still be a challenging 40 days of preparation for living the Christian life, for the rest of your life.

Here’s how it works:

First — Over the 40 days of Lent, men commit to daily prayer, setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes to spend with the Lord. Each day includes a scripture reading and reflection written to help men better understand, grow in, and live virtue.

Second — More than just giving up chocolate, men take up a range of disciplines and sacrifices for the season of Lent. Sweets, snacks, social media, are all gone.

Third — Men commit to a fraternity of 5-7 men. Each week, the fraternity meets to pray together, check in, hold each other accountable and encourage one another.

On Easter Sunday, you’ll walk away with a new and lasting understanding of what it means to live the full Christian life. Chocolate bunnies and all.

The way we speak about God, our neighbor, and ourselves

He was a running back for four years at North Dakota State University, capped off by a senior season in which he was named All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first team as a fullback. In high school he had been an all-state running back and was even named to the 2012 Minnesota Vikings all-state team and Associated Press all-state second team. In addition, he was an outstanding wrestler in high school, winning the 2012 state championship. Along the way he, unfortunately, went through a major event in his family. Nowadays he is the co-founder of and head trainer at Rise Training & Fitness in Minnesota.

In Session 1, we saw that men and society has reduced fatherhood to the exchange of a small amount of genetic material. Perhaps we’ve minimized the concept of fatherhood because we’ve minimized the concept of the human person. In this session, we will look at the mystery of the human person – starting with neurology.

The human person is mind and body – spirit and matter. You are the father of your child’s material body. God the Father creates your child’s spiritual soul. God the Father then uses your fatherhood to become a food for your child’s soul.

They will watch your every move and then incorporate it into working models of the world.  Let’s look at the example of St. Therese and St. Louis Martin.  Let us pray to produce good fruit like St. Louis Martin.

Aquinas, Philosophy, and Stuff w/ Fr. Gregory Pine

Service

His name is synonymous with wrestling success. He won six consecutive world championships as a competitor from 1987-92, including gold medals at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Additionally, he owns five national championships as head coach of Oklahoma State's men's wrestling program, a role that he has held for 30 years. During that time, he has coached 33 NCAA individual champions and five Olympians. He was recognized as the National Wrestling Coaches Association coach of the year in 1994 and 2003 and is a 15-time selection as his conference’s coach of the year. Most recently, he led his squad to its ninth consecutive Big 12 tournament title, with three of his student-athletes claiming individual Big 12 Conference titles in 2021. He has an .863 winning percentage for his career dual match record as a head coach.

Back when I worked as an apologist with Catholic Answers we received a lot of questions around this time of year. Perhaps the most common was, “are Sunday’s excluded from Lent?” The answer is . . . are you ready for this? No. Sunday’s are not excluded from Lent. According to the <a href= "https://www.ewtn.com/library/CURIA/CDWLITYR.HTM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar</a>, “Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive” (28). No exceptions are given for Sunday’s during Lent. In fact, a couple of paragraphs later the GN says: “The Sundays of this season are called the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent. The Sixth Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, is called Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday)” (30). So there you have it. Now, does that mean that we cannot choose to allow ourselves the things we voluntarily gave up for lent? No, it doesn’t. These voluntary fasts are personal devotions. Because they have been voluntarily taken up, we can choose to set them aside. That said, be awesome and sacrifice this Lent. Christianity means that we belong to Christ as members of His body and that means that we extend his mission through our own body, our own space, and time.  What is the mission of Christ.  One of the reasons He says He came to this world was to seek and to save what is lost.  If we are to be faithful to our mission we need to do the same.

A former National Evangelization Team missionary, Bishop Cozzens also serves as Chairman of the Board for NET Ministries. We discuss Bishop Cozzens’ vocation story, why the Eucharist is the “Source and Summit of the Christian life,” the goals of the Eucharistic Revival and how Array of Hope is contributing to it! -- About Bp. Andrew CozzensBishop Cozzens, who has served as Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis since 2013, was born August 3, 1968. He is the son of Jack and Judy Cozzens and the youngest of three children. Bishop Cozzens graduated from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, where he experienced a deepening of the faith through the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. During a period of discernment after college, Bishop Cozzens served as a traveling missionary to young people around the country with Twin Cities-based NET Ministries. During his first month as a missionary, his NET team served in the Diocese of Crookston putting on retreats in the parishes and schools throughout the diocese. After serving with NET Ministries, he joined the Companions of Christ, a fraternity of diocesan priests in Saint Paul, and worked for Saint Paul’s Outreach leading college Bible study groups. After his year of discernment, he was accepted into the Saint Paul Seminary. Four years later, in 1997, he was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Bishop Cozzens served as Parochial Vicar at the Cathedral of Saint Paul and then Faribault Catholic Community (now Divine Mercy) before being sent to Rome for doctoral studies. Upon his return to Minnesota, Bishop Cozzens served as a Professor of Sacramental Theology and a Formator at the Saint Paul Seminary from 2006 until 2013. In the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis Bishop Cozzens has served as Vicar for Catholic Education and supervised the Archdiocesan Synod Process while overseeing the offices of Latino Ministry, Evangelization, and Marriage, Family and Life.  He currently serves as the chair of the board for NET Ministries, St. Paul’s Outreach, The Institute for Priestly Formation and The Seminary Formation Council. A Eucharistic Revival w/ Bishop Andrew Cozzens

Huge thanks to Philipe Ortiz and Katie Kuchar in particular for supporting to the show! --- We may speak about prayer in two ways: first, by considering it in itself; secondly, by considering it in its cause. The cause of prayer is the desire of charity, from which prayer ought to arise: and this desire ought to be in us continually, either actually or virtually, for the virtue of this desire remains in whatever we do out of charity; and we ought to "do all things to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). From this point of view prayer ought to be continual: wherefore Augustine says (ad Probam, Ep. cxxx, 9): "Faith, hope and charity are by themselves a prayer of continual longing." But prayer, considered in itself, cannot be continual, because we have to be busy about other works, and, as Augustine says (ad Probam. Ep. cxxx, 9), "we pray to God with our lips at certain intervals and seasons, in order to admonish ourselves by means of such like signs, to take note of the amount of our progress in that desire, and to arouse ourselves more eagerly to an increase thereof." Now the quantity of a thing should be commensurate with its end, for instance the quantity of the dose should be commensurate with health. And so it is becoming that prayer should last long enough to arouse the fervor of the interior desire: and when it exceeds this measure, so that it cannot be continued any longer without causing weariness, it should be discontinued. Wherefore Augustine says (ad Probam. Ep. cxxx): "It is said that the brethren in Egypt make frequent but very short prayers, rapid ejaculations, as it were, lest that vigilant and erect attention which is so necessary in prayer slacken and languish, through the strain being prolonged. By so doing they make it sufficiently clear not only that this attention must not be forced if we are unable to keep it up, but also that if we are able to continue, it should not be broken off too soon." And just as we must judge of this in private prayers by considering the attention of the person praying, so too, in public prayers we must judge of it by considering the devotion of the people.   Objection 1. It would seem that prayer should not be continual. It is written (Matthew 6:7): "When you are praying, speak not much." Now one who prays a long time needs to speak much, especially if his be vocal prayer. Therefore prayer should not last a long time. Reply to Objection 1. As Augustine says (ad Probam. Ep. cxxx), "to pray with many words is not the same as to pray long; to speak long is one thing, to be devout long is another. For it is written that our Lord passed the whole night in prayer, and that He 'prayed the longer' in order to set us an example." Further on he says: "When praying say little, yet pray much so long as your attention is fervent. For to say much in prayer is to discuss your need in too many words: whereas to pray much is to knock at the door of Him we pray, by the continuous and devout clamor of the heart. Indeed this business is frequently done with groans rather than with words, with tears rather than with speech." Objection 4. On the contrary, It would seem that we ought to pray continually. For our Lord said (Luke 18:1): "We ought always to pray, and not to faint": and it is written (1 Thessalonians 5:17): "Pray without ceasing." Reply to Objection 4. One may pray continually, either through having a continual desire, as stated above; or through praying at certain fixed times, though interruptedly; or by reason of the effect, whether in the person who prays--because he remains more devout even after praying, or in some other person--as when by his kindness a man incites another to pray for him, even after he himself has ceased praying.  ST.
