WOF 276: Approaches to the Question of God (Part 2 of 2)

In the ascent towards holiness and happiness, a Catholic man must build the good habits (Virtue, from the Latin, vir, meaning “manliness, moral strength, goodness, valor”) of the moral life and break the bad habits (Vice, from the Latin, vitium, meaning “defect, offense, blemish, imperfection”) which cause him to fall into sin and risk losing his salvation. The Head Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at the University of Dallas, which is a Catholic institution. Prior to his current position he had spent a year-and-a-half working as the Program and Events Manager with Chicago Area Runners Association. He has a wealth of coaching experience that includes collegiate, high school, youth club, and adult levels for cross country and track and field. Overall, he has coached 25 USTFCCCA All-Americans, nine NJCAA All-Americans, and two Northern Athletics Conference All-Conference athletes. A Military Veteran with high honors, as an athlete he competed for the All-Navy track and field team. Plus, while he was not on duty, he competed as a sprinter/mid-distance athlete, at various NCAA college meets and open meets. He has competed in over 100 road races including nine marathons and one ultramarathon.

Today we share Bishop Barron’s presentation entitled “Breaking Through the Buffered Self,” which he offered for the prestigious 2022 Albert Cardinal Meyer Lecture series hosted at Mundelein Seminary back in March 2022. In the talk, Bishop Barron looks at the intellectual matrix that has made the army of the disaffiliated possible, namely, what Charles Taylor calls the culture of the “buffered self,” the ego cut off from any living contact with the transcendent. Then, using the three great transcendentals—the good, the true, and the beautiful—as his framework, he proposes ways to break through the buffered self and to open the restless heart to a consideration of God and the things of God. (This is Part I of his lecture series. We will share Part II on a future episode.)
