In today's episode we'll take a look at the following questions: Is it possible to hate God? Is hatred of God the greatest of sins? Is hatred of one's neighbor always a sin? Is hated a deadly sin? If not, from what deadly sin does hatred arise? We'll also be reading a lot from Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground. <a href= "https://www.amazon.com/Underground-Vintage-Classics-Fyodor-Dostoevsky/dp/067973452X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Here</a>'s the edition I have and recommend. --- Please support my work --&gt; https://pintswithaquinas.com/donate/ --- Here's the main article we look at from Aquinas in today's episode: Whether it is possible for anyone to hate God? Objection 1. It would seem that no man can hate God. For Dionysius says (Div. Nom. iv) that "the first good and beautiful is an object of love and dilection to all." But God is goodness and beauty itself. Therefore He is hated by none. Objection 2. Further, in the Apocryphal books of 3 Esdras 4:36,[39] it is written that "all things call upon truth . . . and (all men) do well like of her works." Now God is the very truth according to John 14:6. Therefore all love God, and none can hate Him. Objection 3. Further, hatred is a kind of aversion. But according to Dionysius (Div. Nom. i) God draws all things to Himself. Therefore none can hate Him. On the contrary, It is written (Psalm 73:23): "The pride of them that hate Thee ascendeth continually," and (John 15:24): "But now they have both seen and hated both Me and My Father." I answer that, As shown above (I-II:29:1), hatred is a movement of the appetitive power, which power is not set in motion save by something apprehended. Now God can be apprehended by man in two ways; first, in Himself, as when He is seen in His Essence; secondly, in His effects, when, to wit, "the invisible things" of God . . . "are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made" (Romans 1:20). Now God in His Essence is goodness itself, which no man can hate—for it is natural to good to be loved. Hence it is impossible for one who sees God in His Essence, to hate Him. Moreover some of His effects are such that they can nowise be contrary to the human will, since "to be, to live, to understand," which are effects of God, are desirable and lovable to all. Wherefore again God cannot be an object of hatred if we consider Him as the Author of such like effects. Some of God's effects, however, are contrary to an inordinate will, such as the infliction of punishment, and the prohibition of sin by the Divine Law. Such like effects are repugnant to a will debased by sin, and as regards the consideration of them, God may be an object of hatred to some, in so far as they look upon Him as forbidding sin, and inflicting punishment. Reply to Objection 1. This argument is true of those who see God's Essence, which is the very essence of goodness. Reply to Objection 2. This argument is true in so far as God is apprehended as the cause of such effects as are naturally beloved of all, among which are the works of Truth who reveals herself to men. At the event, he had everything planned as to what he would say, but then the Holy Spirit took over, and Brett’s life changed forever.In adoration later that day, Brett felt called to name his unborn child - - Jesse. Brett left that retreat a changed man. He went on to start the first pro-life magazine, and in his first issue, he wrote about an organization called Heroic Media. It wasn’t long before Brett was asked to join Heroic Media to run marketing and to keep the magazine going as well. Today Brett is the CEO of Heroic Media and the author of Your Pro-Life Bottom Line. WOF 332: How to Start Praying the Liturgy of the Hours

He was chosen one year ago this month in the third round of the National Football League Draft, 72nd overall by the Seattle Seahawks. He is an offensive tackle who appeared in all but one of Seattle's 17 games this past season and was named to the All-Rookie Team. He also played his college football there in the Pacific Northwest, having been a four-year starter at right tackle for Washington State, starting 42 consecutive games. He was the first Cougars offensive lineman in program history to earn All-Pac-12 Conference honors four times and would go on to play in the Senior Bowl. During his student-athlete days in high school he was named All-USA Washington second-team by USA Today.

This past year we witnessed the passing of Alice von Hildebrand, Catholic philosopher and author, and wife of one of the foremost theologians and philosophers of the 20th century, Dietrich von Hildebrand. The third way is taken from possibility and necessity, and runs thus. We find in nature things that are possible to be and not to be, since they are found to be generated, and to corrupt, and consequently, they are possible to be and not to be. But it is impossible for these always to exist, for that which is possible not to be at some time is not. Therefore, if everything is possible not to be, then at one time there could have been nothing in existence. Now if this were true, even now there would be nothing in existence, because that which does not exist only begins to exist by something already existing. Therefore, if at one time nothing was in existence, it would have been impossible for anything to have begun to exist; and thus even now nothing would be in existence — which is absurd. Therefore, not all beings are merely possible, but there must exist something the existence of which is necessary. But every necessary thing either has its necessity caused by another, or not. Now it is impossible to go on to infinity in necessary things which have their necessity caused by another, as has been already proved in regard to efficient causes. Therefore we cannot but postulate the existence of some being having of itself its own necessity, and not receiving it from another, but rather causing in others their necessity. This all men speak of as God.   ST 1. Q. 2, A 3. --- The 13 step argument given by Robert in the interview: 1. We find in reality some things that are capable of existing and not existing, because they are found to be generated and to corrupt.   2. We call such beings possible beings.   3. A possible being cannot be the cause of its own existence.   4. This is so for two reasons: (1) It would already have to exist in order to cause its own existence, but if it already exists then it does not need to cause its own existence, and (2) If it caused its own existence then it would be both prior to itself and also not prior to itself, which is a contradiction and thus impossible.   5. Therefore a possible being must get its existence from a cause that exists external to it.   6. It is impossible that everything which exists is a possible being.   7. The reason is that nothing could have begun to exist in reality if everything were a possible being because a possible being only comes to exist through an already existing cause external to it, which would not exist if everything were a possible being.   8. But if nothing could have begun to exist in reality then nothing would have existed in the past and nothing would exist now, because “from nothing, nothing comes.”   9. But this is absurd because things exist now.   10. Thus not all things are possible beings—at least one necessary being must exist.   11. There are 2 ways for a being to be necessary: (1) it can get its necessity from another; (2) it can get its necessity from itself (per se).   12. If it has its necessity from another, then it requires a cause external to it.   13. An infinity of beings that get their necessity from another would not explain how anything came to exist, just as it is clear from the above that an infinity of possible beings would not explain how anything came to be.   Conclusion: There must be a cause that has of itself (per se) its own necessity (i.e., it does not receive necessity from another), and on which all other beings are, ultimately, dependent for their existence. Our topic comes from a book Adam has been reading called, &#8220;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Superfluous-Rev-James-Jackson/dp/0997032901" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nothing Superfluous</a>&#8220;. It&#8217;s a mindblowing book that shows how we receive each gift of the Holy Spirit during a specific part of the Holy Mass in order to receive the necessary grace to pray the Holy Mass well.
