Men treat Lent as optional. However, if this were the case, Christ would NOT have begun His public ministry with the command to repent. Yet most Catholic men approach Lent as if it were extra credit — giving something up, struggling through forty days, and returning to the same patterns unchanged. Lent is ordered toward metanoia, a real turning away from sin and a deliberate turning toward Christ.

<h2>100 years ago, if you were talking about teenagers, no one would know what you were talking about. What are the ramifications of creating this new category in society and in the Church?</h2>
When teenagers were revoked from the adults category, there were isolated into their own classification. Not grouped with adults meant they were able in many ways to continue the way of life they knew for their whole existence but with more bodily maturity too.
Here are a few points of discussion:

 	<li>Culture of the 1960's and 1970's</li>
 	<li>Youth culture over adult culture</li>
 	<li>God and the faith are "ever ancient and ever new" not forever young</li>

 	<li>Maturity is restrained and unfree, bound to God and the crosses He sends and the people He binds us to. True freedom is not youthful unattachment, but the loss of the types of freedoms the world pursues</li>

About the Topic:
“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure  their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father whose in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus says “when you fast” not “if you fast”. He expected us to fast. But we should not fast out of dieting or pride, but out of love of God. 
Fasting improves us spiritually in several ways (from <a href="https://jimmyakin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jimmy Akin</a>):

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">We express our recognition that spiritual things are more important than physical things.</li>
 	<li class="li1">We learn to deny ourselves pleasures, even in spite of pain. (Increase in fortitude)</li>
 	<li class="li1">We declare that we recognize the need to reform and to get closer to God.</li>
 	<li class="li1">We willingly embrace the hunger fasting produces as a sign of being willing to shoulder the burdens of others (Col. 1:24 - “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is Lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church…”). What is lacking: Christ’s sufferings were, of course, sufficient for our redemption, but all of us may add ours to his, in order that the fruits of his redemption be applied to the souls of men. </li>
 	<li class="li1">We express humility before God by adopting a humble posture, recognizing our dependence on him and affirming our submissiveness to his will.</li>
</ol> 
4 classes of penitents who committed major sins (idolatry, murder, abortion, adultery) in the ancient formal penitential discipline:

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">Weepers - Not allowed in the church but stayed outside and asked those going in to pray for them.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Hearers - Stood inside the church doors and heard the liturgy of the word but were dismissed before the liturgy of the Eucharist.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Kneelers - knelt or lay down in church and participated with the Church in specific prayers for them before being blessed by the bishop and dismissed prior to the Eucharist. </li>
 	<li class="li1">Standers - sat in the congregation and stayed for the liturgy of the Eucharist but did not receive Communion.</li>
</ol> 
5 Tips when Fasting:

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">Have a specific intention for your suffering. Visualize the person you are praying for or the grace you are asking God to give you.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Set a schedule. Scheduling how your day will look helps avoid moments of inactivity. Helps to go to sleep on time and get up early.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Increase the amount of water you drink per day.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Take multi-vitamins. When you fast you will become deficient in some vitamins your body is used to having.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Don’t complain. No one should know you are fasting.</li>
</ol> 
Canon Law on Feast Days: 
Can. 1246 §1. Sunday, on which by apostolic tradition the paschal mystery is celebrated, must be observed in the universal Church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints.
Canon Law on Days of Penance: 
Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Can. 1252 The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.
Can. 1253 The conference of bishops can determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence as well as substitute other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety, in whole or in part, for abstinence and fast.

<h2>About our drink: Vat 69</h2>
David Bates brought this from across the pond, as you can not get it here in the States. Vat 69 was the go-to scotch for Lewis, so it was very fitting for us to be sipping on the drink while talking about the Christian author.
The iconic Vat 69 bottle with its bulbous neck was introduced to the market and was not changed for about one hundred years. In 1882, William Sanderson prepared one hundred casks of blended whisky and hired a panel of experts to taste them. The batch from the cask (or “vat”) with number 69 was judged to be the best, and this provided the whisky&#8217;s <a title="Brand" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brand">brand name</a>. The whisky was at first bottled in <a title="Port wine" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_wine">port</a> bottles. In 1884, Sanderson bought the <a title="Glen Garioch distillery" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Garioch_distillery">Glen Garioch distillery</a> which was situated in the middle of a <a title="Barley" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barley">barley</a> field. The distillery was meant to ensure the delivery of grain whisky.

C.S. Lewis was a British writer and theologian. He is best known for his works of fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.
The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetic novel written in a satirical format where the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it.

It is a clarion call that hope must not be merely theoretical, but must “lead us to a deeper relationship with God, an encounter with the One who loves us and calls us to friendship with Himself.”

We try to lay out what hope is but also shows how we can exercise this theological virtue, through being daring, changing our ways, serving the Lord, struggling, suffering, and praying. We examine how hope directs us to our ultimate goal of life with God and gives us the strength and perseverance to attain it.

Father Philip G. Bochanski, a native of suburban Philadelphia, was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1999.  In addition to several parish assignments, he has served as a high school teacher, chaplain for cloistered nuns, and spiritual director for seminarians. In 2017, he was appointed the executive director of Courage International, an apostolate that provides pastoral care to men and women who experience same-sex attractions and have chosen to live a chaste life.  He is an award-winning author, and has published several articles, books and audio lecture series on such topics as Church history, spirituality and pastoral care.

This bourbon tastes like many young bourbons I&#8217;ve had from start-up distilleries with its light nose and sweet palate profile.

Fr. Bryan Brooks was born in Oklahoma City nearly fifty years ago. My parents are Mary Brooks and the late Bob Brooks. I am the third of four children, three boys and one girl. I was baptized and raised a Methodist and attended public schools. My dad was an auto mechanic who started his own company of car repair and remanufacturing of engine parts. It was the family business and at different times I and my siblings worked with our parents in some form. As a child and adolescent, I was active in Boy Scouts. While in high school I was a member of a Disciples of Christ congregation.
He was ordained to the priesthood May 28, 1993. Pastor &#8211; St. Benedict Parish (Broken Arrow), Vicar for Priests &#8211; Diocese of Tulsa.

<h4>About the beer &#8211; Fr. Dominic Belgian Quad 9% ABV</h4>
In 1875 Father Dominic, a Belgian Monk, would travel to Indian Territory with the Saint Benedictine Monks from France. He would become the first brewmeister in the territory. This Abbey Quad in strict obedience, gives reverence to Father Dominic. His fermented drinks were enjoyed by the local Native Americans and many of the early boomers. This is a dark Belgian style Quad that is beautifully complex with hints of molasses, prairie fruits, and Belgian Candi. It is a heavenly smooth and delightful elixir that is dangerously drinkable.

<h2>Twelve  Steps  of  Humility</h2>
Step 1. A first step is taken when one consciously obeys all of God’s commandments, never ignoring them but always holding within himself a fear of God in his heart.
Step 2. The second step is achieved when one thinks not about pleasing himself but instead follow the injunction of the Lord.
Step 3. The third step is reached when out of love of God, one obediently submits to a superior in imitation of the Lord.
Step 4. The fourth step is achieved when one, under obedience, patiently and quietly endures all thing that are inflicted on him.  It should make no difference whether the trials are painful, unjust or even completely beyond his understanding; he should neither tire nor give up.
Step 5. The fifth step is reached when one humbly discloses to his superior all the evil thoughts in his heart, as well as those faults and evil acts he has actually committed.
Step 6. To achieve the sixth step one must without qualms accept all that is crude and harsh; at all times he considers himself a poor and worthless workman.
Step 7. The seventh step is attained when one not only confesses that he is an inferior and common wretch, but believes it to his very core.  He must be willing to humble himself.
Step 8. One reaches the eighth step of humility when he does only that which is demanded by the common rule of his seniors.
Step 9. The ninth step can be achieved when one, practicing silence, only speaks when asked a question.
Step 10. The tenth step is climbed when one restrains himself from undue laughter and frivolity.
Step 11. To reach the eleventh step one must speak gently, without jests, but simply, seriously, tersely, rationally and softly.
Step 12. The final step is attained only when one can at all times show humility not only in his appearance and actions, but also in his heart.

In today's episode of Pints With Aquinas we ask Thomas about knowledge and stuff (that sounded smart right? "and stuff"). --- On this point the philosophers held three opinions. For Democritus held that "all knowledge is caused by images issuing from the bodies we think of and entering into our souls," as Augustine says in his letter to Dioscorus (cxviii, 4). And Aristotle says (De Somn. et Vigil.) that Democritus held that knowledge is cause by a "discharge of images." And the reason for this opinion was that both Democritus and the other early philosophers did not distinguish between intellect and sense, as Aristotle relates (De Anima iii, 3). Consequently, since the sense is affected by the sensible, they thought that all our knowledge is affected by this mere impression brought about by sensible things. Which impression Democritus held to be caused by a discharge of images. Plato, on the other hand, held that the intellect is distinct from the senses: and that it is an immaterial power not making use of a corporeal organ for its action. And since the incorporeal cannot be affected by the corporeal, he held that intellectual knowledge is not brought about by sensible things affecting the intellect, but by separate intelligible forms being participated by the intellect, as we have said above (Articles 4 and 5). Moreover he held that sense is a power operating of itself. Consequently neither is sense, since it is a spiritual power, affected by the sensible: but the sensible organs are affected by the sensible, the result being that the soul is in a way roused to form within itself the species of the sensible. Augustine seems to touch on this opinion (Gen. ad lit. xii, 24) where he says that the "body feels not, but the soul through the body, which it makes use of as a kind of messenger, for reproducing within itself what is announced from without." Thus according to Plato, neither does intellectual knowledge proceed from sensible knowledge, nor sensible knowledge exclusively from sensible things; but these rouse the sensible soul to the sentient act, while the senses rouse the intellect to the act of understanding. Aristotle chose a middle course. For with Plato he agreed that intellect and sense are different. But he held that the sense has not its proper operation without the cooperation of the body; so that to feel is not an act of the soul alone, but of the "composite." And he held the same in regard to all the operations of the sensitive part. Since, therefore, it is not unreasonable that the sensible objects which are outside the soul should produce some effect in the "composite," Aristotle agreed with Democritus in this, that the operations of the sensitive part are caused by the impression of the sensible on the sense: not by a discharge, as Democritus said, but by some kind of operation. For Democritus maintained that every operation is by way of a discharge of atoms, as we gather from De Gener. i, 8. But Aristotle held that the intellect has an operation which is independent of the body's cooperation. Now nothing corporeal can make an impression on the incorporeal. And therefore in order to cause the intellectual operation according to Aristotle, the impression caused by the sensible does not suffice, but something more noble is required, for "the agent is more noble than the patient," as he says (De Gener. i, 5). Not, indeed, in the sense that the intellectual operation is effected in us by the mere impression of some superior beings, as Plato held; but that the higher and more noble agent which he calls the active intellect, of which we have spoken above (I:79:4) causes the phantasms received from the senses to be actually intelligible, by a process of abstraction. According to this opinion, then, on the part of the phantasms, intellectual knowledge is caused by the senses. But since the phantasms cannot of themselves affect the passive intellect, and require to be made actually intelligible by the active intellect, it cannot be said that sensible knowledge is the total and perfect cause of intellectual knowledge, but rather that it is in a way the material cause. ST I, Q. 84, A. 6. --- Here's what Thomas said in response to what we now call idealism: This is, however, manifestly false for two reasons. First, because the things we understand are the objects of science; therefore if what we understand is merely the intelligible species in the soul, it would follow that every science would not be concerned with objects outside the soul, but only with the intelligible species within the soul; thus, according to the teaching of the Platonists all science is about ideas, which they held to be actually understood [I:84:1]. Secondly, it is untrue, because it would lead to the opinion of the ancients who maintained that "whatever seems, is true" [Aristotle, Metaph. iii. 5], and that consequently contradictories are true simultaneously. For if the faculty knows its own impression only, it can judge of that only. Now a thing seems according to the impression made on the cognitive faculty. Consequently the cognitive faculty will always judge of its own impression as such; and so every judgment will be true: for instance, if taste perceived only its own impression, when anyone with a healthy taste perceives that honey is sweet, he would judge truly; and if anyone with a corrupt taste perceives that honey is bitter, this would be equally true; for each would judge according to the impression on his taste. Thus every opinion would be equally true; in fact, every sort of apprehension. Therefore it must be said that the intelligible species is related to the intellect as that by which it understands: which is proved thus. There is a twofold action (Metaph. ix, Did. viii, 8), one which remains in the agent; for instance, to see and to understand; and another which passes into an external object; for instance, to heat and to cut; and each of these actions proceeds in virtue of some form. And as the form from which proceeds an act tending to something external is the likeness of the object of the action, as heat in the heater is a likeness of the thing heated; so the form from which proceeds an action remaining in the agent is the likeness of the object. Hence that by which the sight sees is the likeness of the visible thing; and the likeness of the thing understood, that is, the intelligible species, is the form by which the intellect understands. But since the intellect reflects upon itself, by such reflection it understands both its own act of intelligence, and the species by which it understands. Thus the intelligible species is that which is understood secondarily; but that which is primarily understood is the object, of which the species is the likeness. This also appears from the opinion of the ancient philosophers, who said that "like is known by like." For they said that the soul knows the earth outside itself, by the earth within itself; and so of the rest. If, therefore, we take the species of the earth instead of the earth, according to Aristotle (De Anima iii, 8), who says "that a stone is not in the soul, but only the likeness of the stone"; it follows that the soul knows external things by means of its intelligible species. Leaders are people of action.  They are those who have the vision to know what they want to do, the intelligence to choose how to do it, and the dedication to carry the job through.  It’s this last part that is a challenge for many.  As soon as we begin the process of change, challenges will arise from every side.  How do we form the heart and the drive sufficient to carry our actions through to success.  In these circumstances the Christian faith shines beautifully and gives Christian leaders and advantage.

Dr. Jeff LaCour on Suffering, Marriage, and Surrender to God

Sometimes even the best leaders can forget that in the end leadership isn’t about them.  If we are leading our people, it’s to lead them to something bigger than ourselves and sometimes we have to die to ourselves in order to bring people to something that will really be good for them.  At Cana in Galilee the Virgin Mary triggers a series of events that will lead to our Lord’s crucifixion and death.  She hastens the hour of its coming even though that means that she will have to say goodbye sooner.  She teaches us how to lead even when that means saying goodbye.

Back when I worked as an apologist with Catholic Answers we received a lot of questions around this time of year. Perhaps the most common was, "are Sunday's excluded from Lent?" The answer is . . . are you ready for this? No. Sunday's are not excluded from Lent. According to the <a href="https://www.ewtn.com/library/CURIA/CDWLITYR.HTM">General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar</a>, "Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord's Supper exclusive" (28). No exceptions are given for Sunday's during Lent. In fact, a couple of paragraphs later the GN says: "The Sundays of this season are called the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent. The Sixth Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, is called Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday)" (30). So there you have it. Now, does that mean that we cannot choose to allow ourselves the things we voluntarily gave up for lent? No, it doesn't. These voluntary fasts are personal devotions. Because they have been voluntarily taken up, we can choose to set them aside. That said, be awesome and sacrifice this Lent. What my P.E coach told me in middle-school applies to Lent also, "mate, if it's not hurting, you're not doing it right." BISHOP'S MESSAGE:
"My brothers in Christ, my name is Bishop Joe Coffey. I'm an auxiliary Bishop with the military Archdiocese, having served almost 20 years on active duty as a Navy chaplain with tours with the Navy, the Marines, and the Coast Guard. I am honored that the Catholic Men's Leadership Alliance has asked me to be their Episcopal moderator. They were formed just a few years ago and their mission is very simple: strengthen the man, strengthen the family, strengthen the church, and strengthen the culture.

There's no doubt in anybody's mind that we are in trouble right now. Our world is in trouble, our church is in trouble, our country is in trouble, but God has always raised up men to be leaders. Just think of the role he gave my patron saint, St Joseph, in Salvation history. His mission: protect the savior of the world and his blessed mother. Talk about a mission! And he did it with grace, and humility, and Faith. 

So men: in history, men have always loved their families, their wives, their kids, and their country, and will be willing to lay down their lives for them. Men love the church, men love the Lord, and love to pray. So join other men from around our country with the Catholic Men's Leadership Alliance, and help them help you, and help other men to be the men God created all of us to be.

BISHOP COFFEY'S BIO
Bishop Coffey's bio reads like a military ops report. Born in '60, raised in Philly, this man has been hustling since day one. Double major at La Salle University, ski instructor in Switzerland, and even revving it in the auto industry in Germany and Belgium.

But that's just the prelude. Fast forward to '96, and he's not just Father Coffey anymore; he's Navy Chaplain Coffey. Ensign status, serving on active duty assignments six global locations, even deploying to the Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan. 

Medals? Plenty.  He’s been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and many  more. This man's the real deal, a spiritual warrior with the grit of a Navy lifer.

We're talking about a leader who's been everywhere from the South Pacific to the Arabian Gulf, and now he's on a new mission with us. Now, Bishop Coffey's reported for duty as the incoming Episcopal Moderator for CMLA, effective December 18, 2023. 

This is more than an extra command post; it's a heroic, spiritual call to arms. As our Episcopal Moderator, he will provide spiritual and apostolic guidance to help keep our mission focused on serving Jesus and His Church.

Miracles Do Happen: In this episode, we are honored to have Dr. Ben Carson - the world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, two-time speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast, presidential candidate, and author. We discuss Dr. Carson’s life and faith, and how he almost miraculously overcame adversity, and went from a life of dire poverty to national recognition. Dr. Carson will share some stories of real miracles he witnessed as a neurosurgeon. We will also discuss what miracles are and the essential part they play in our Faith. -- About Dr. Ben CarsonNeurosurgeon, medical director, foundation executive and author Dr. Benjamin Solomon Carson, Sr. was born on September 18, 1951 in Detroit Michigan, to Sonya and Robert Solomon Carson. After the couple separated, Carson and his brother Curtis lived with their mother. Although she worked several jobs at a time, Sonya supported the family and played a tremendous role in shaping the lives of her sons. Upon seeing her sons’ poor performance in school, Sonya required them to read regularly and to present her with weekly book reports, although she herself only had a third grade education and had difficulty reading. In 1969, Carson graduated with honors as the student “Most likely to succeed,” from Southwestern High School, a public school located in southwest Detroit, Michigan. During his early years, although Carson had improved his grades considerably, he had to overcome his temper. After an incident in which he almost stabbed a friend, Carson made up his mind to change his ways. Upon receiving his high school diploma, Carson attended Yale University, where he would meet his future wife, Lacena “Candy” Rustin. After graduating from Yale University with his B.A. degree in psychology in 1973, he went on to the University of Michigan School of Medicine. After receiving his M.D. degree in 1977, Carson trained at Johns Hopkins University, where he completed his internship in general surgery and his residency in neurological surgery. In 1983, Carson traveled to Perth, Australia to serve as a senior registrar in neurosurgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. A year later, he returned to Johns Hopkins and by the following year was named Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. In 1987, through a ground-breaking surgical procedure, Carson successfully separated conjoined twins who were attached at the head. Outside of his work as a world-renowned surgeon, Carson has been civically active. Using his own life story as a background, Carson has written four motivational books, which include: "Gifted Hands" in 1990, "The Big Picture" in 2000, "Think Big" in 2006, and "Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose, and Live with Acceptable Risk" in 2007. The first of these works served as the inspiration for a film of the same title, in which Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays the role of Carson. Carson has also created three foundations—the Carson Scholars Fund, the Ben Carson Reading Project, and Angels of the Operating Room. He serves on the board of directors of the Kellogg Company and CostCo Wholesale Corporation. In 2008, President George W. Bush presented Carson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
