Ep 107 - The Joy of Suffering with Dr. Paul Chaloux

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say rejoice.On the Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, the Church commands us to do something radical: rejoice, not later, not when life gets easier, but now. In this episode, Fr. Dom breaks open what true Christian joy actually is and why it matters for Catholic men who are fighting daily battles in their homes, their minds, and their souls.This is not sentimental joy. This is not shallow happiness. This is joy rooted in Jesus Christ, joy forged through hope and peace, joy that survives suffering, persecution, and the chaos of the world. Drawing from Sacred Scripture, the Catechism, and the wisdom of the saints, we walk through the Advent virtues of hope, peace, and joy and why gratitude is the weapon that crushes Satan every time.Fr. Dom reflects on family, tradition, and memory, not for nostalgia’s sake, but to remind us what we are fighting for. Then we go deeper. Hope is not optimism. Peace is not comfort. Joy is not dependent on circumstances. These are theological realities planted in your soul at baptism and strengthened through the sacraments.We confront the lie that joy is optional or reserved for the emotionally stable. If joy is missing, something is blocking it. That obstacle must be dragged into the light and surrendered to Christ. Fr. Dom's Homs - Gaudete Sunday: Why Real Joy Is a Weapon the Enemy Fears

Deacon Craig Anderson discusses “We are Deacons: Our Important Role in the Church”. Deacon Craig will be speaking in depth about the integral role that deacons play, and how it has changed and matured over time.  

ABOUT DEACON 

Deacon Craig Anderson was ordained in February 2011 for the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy (Diocese) of Phoenix,  which serves the 13 western states, and is part of the Byzantine Catholic Church in America, an Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. 

He retired after a career in the Fire service, working as a Fire investigator and fire prevention officer for a northern California Fire Dept. Before that he worked as a Roman Catholic lay minister and high school teacher. He has a Master of Arts degree in Theology and Ministry from Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he met his wife MaryTherese. 

They have five adult children and eight grandchildren. Deacon Craig has been involved in ministry to men for most of his life (and previously served on the Board for Catholic Men's Fellowship of California). He and his wife recently relocated to Fort Worth, Texas.

Episode 8: Restoration with the Father

He played tennis and beach volleyball in high school and the latter when he was a student-athlete at Texas State University. Present day he participates in mixed martial arts, lifting weights, hiking, and doing Spartan races. He is co-founder of and fitness director for Hypuro Fit, whose mission is to bring a technically excellent and authentically Catholic approach to personal training. He also has a story about his own reversion to the Catholic faith, which he shares during this interview.

CSR 312 Chase Crouse

He was chosen one year ago this month in the third round of the National Football League Draft, 72nd overall by the Seattle Seahawks. He is an offensive tackle who appeared in all but one of Seattle's 17 games this past season and was named to the All-Rookie Team. He also played his college football there in the Pacific Northwest, having been a four-year starter at right tackle for Washington State, starting 42 consecutive games. He was the first Cougars offensive lineman in program history to earn All-Pac-12 Conference honors four times and would go on to play in the Senior Bowl. During his student-athlete days in high school he was named All-USA Washington second-team by USA Today.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C

A NASCAR Hall of Famer who was the 1983 champion of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and had three Daytona 500 victories, among numerous other titles and championships. He won on 27 different tracks and had at least three wins in every NASCAR major. He ended his career with 85 victories and was named one of NASCAR's "50 Greatest Drivers." He was also a seven-time Most Popular Driver Award-winner.

CSR 142 Bobby Allison

He played college hockey and now coaches in that sport, while serving as the Board President for Catholic Sports Camps. (His father had run a hockey camp in the 1980s with the Chicago Blackhawks.) All that despite having also attended (for graduate school) the largest Catholic university in the United States, because, he talks here of being called back to the church after falling away after he left his parents' house, having been raised a cradle Catholic.

CSR 22 Chris Gomez

The Senior Associate Athletics Director at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, including serving as the sport administrator for men's soccer, women's basketball, and men's & women's swimming and diving, among other responsibilities. Previously she spent 14 years as the head women's volleyball coach at Milwaukee, where her teams compiled a remarkable 118-14 record in Horizon League play over her last ten seasons. In 2017 she was inducted into the Milwaukee Athletics Hall of Fame. Earlier in her career she was an assistant coach at three different universities, after having been a standout volleyball player at the University of Notre Dame.

WOF 176: A God Problem in "The New York Times"

He grew up a four-sport athlete, including having been a highly recruited football player out of high school. Present day, he continues to train and compete across multiple sports. He is a Board-Certified Sports Clinical Specialist who has worked with elite performers across a wide spectrum: from semi-professional rugby players and Division I collegiate athletes to former NFL players and nationally ranked senior Olympians. A convert to the Catholic faith, he leads Hope Not Nope's human performance initiatives, serving military special operators, elite athletes, and driven entrepreneurs. Plus, he has also authored a book by the same name, Hope Not Nope.

A special episode, of sorts, he returns after having previously been on this show way back on Episode 120, more than two-and-a-half years ago. He is the Senior Director of Mission Integration, CYO, and Social Action for Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Cleveland. Earlier this year he was awarded St. Ambrose parish's Servant Leader Award. Over two years ago he had started a parish-based mental health ministry at St. Ambrose, and, as we hear about in this conversation, back in January of THIS year CYO began training their athletic directors regarding the mental health crises of children and teens.

This episode becomes a moving tribute to the people who quietly shaped Sean’s faith and character, and an invitation for all of us to ask deeper questions about the stories and saints hidden in the lives of those around us. In this special Christmas Eve episode, Victor and I reflect on the true meaning of giving your whole heart to God. Too often, we hold back out of fear—fear of being hurt, fear of what surrender really means, or even fear of giving up the “worldly things” that we think will satisfy us. But here’s the truth: the heart is where transformation happens.

When God calls us to follow Him, He doesn’t just want our minds or our actions—He wants our hearts, fully and completely. We dive deep into what it means to stop hedging your bets and go all-in with Christ, trusting Him with everything. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about choosing Him each day and giving Him access to every part of your life, even the messy places.

From scripture to the wisdom of the saints, we explore why the heart is so central to our faith:

- Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
- Ezekiel 36:26: God promises to replace our hearts of stone with hearts of flesh.
- Psalm 16: David’s example of choosing God as his “portion and cup.”


We also talk about the powerful reflections from Archbishop Fulton Sheen and St. Augustine:

- Fulton Sheen reminds us that part of our hearts are with God in heaven, and we’ll always feel incomplete until we turn back to Him.
- St. Augustine famously said: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

And let’s be honest—this hits home for all of us. So many of us try to “play it safe” with God, hedging our bets and keeping one foot in the world. We share personal stories and struggles with this, and how we’ve learned (the hard way) that true joy and peace only come when we surrender fully to God’s love.

And hey, this isn’t just for “perfect Christians.” We talk about how the journey to giving God your whole heart is ongoing—there are ups, downs, mistakes, and grace-filled moments along the way. Jesus doesn’t demand perfection; He asks for our trust, our surrender, and our love.

On this beautiful Christmas Eve, we’re reminded that God gave everything for us. He sent His only Son to take on flesh, to live among us, and ultimately to give His life for ours. If God has already given us His heart, how can we not respond by offering Him ours in return?

Sometimes life is easy and sometimes life comes at us like a ton of bricks, with obstacles we can't seem to overcome. Our perspective can get distorted because we are stuck in the moment. When this happens it's important to remember that God has a plan for you and it is not a short-term plan. He has an eternal vision. Meditate this week on the reality that God has an eternal vision for you. If we maintain an eternal perspective nothing will seem too big for us.
