Bl. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humbert_of_Romans" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Humbert</a> of Romans in his book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Oratione-Collection-Humbert-Romans-Writings/dp/1989905242" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">De Oratione</a> discusses the importance of location, community, and different aspects of prayer.

On the holiness that must be found in prayer:
 1. Intention of the mind 
 2. Frequency of assiduity 
 3. Holy purity 
“Know, then, that in order to have holiness in prayer, one must take heed that the praying tongue be not infected by sin.”
The Theological and Cardinal virtues associated with Prayer:
Faith: so that our requests may be made in faith
Hope: so that the one praying does not doubt
Charity: Moves on etc holy desires, which our Lord will grant more willingly
Prudence: so that not harmful things be sought, but helpful ones
Justice: Giving God what He is due. Our love and admiration
Fortitude: Which is part of courage, in order that one may persevere in knocking.
Abstinence: which is a part of temperance. For this is a characteristic of holy men, that they join fasting to their prayers.
On being thankful when a prayer is answered.
3 evils result from ingratitude
 1. The first is being deprived of the good that one has received. Chrysostom, “thanksgiving is a kind of tax which our Lord levies upon whatever goods He bestows; and so, just as one who does not pay his property tax may be legally deprived of the property on which it was due, so is it with the ungrateful man and the good things he has received.
 2. The second evil resulting from ingratitude is that it hinders future benefits. For it is neither usual nor reasonable that a man who is ungrateful for what he has already received should be granted other things.
 3. The third evil is punishment, even in this life. For our Lord is not content only to take away from the ungrateful what He had given them, and to bestow nothing else, but sometimes He also adds some temporal penalty.
3 good things result from thanksgiving
 1. Preservation of those goods which have already been received
 2. The multiplication of good things
 3. That one obtains greater things in the next life.
3 things that particularly hinder prayer from having its effect:
 1. The first is the awareness of some serious sin
 2. The second is unmercifulness
 3. The third thing is cruelty toward another

One of the reasons many Christians don’t feel comfortable assuming the role of leadership is that we think it makes us egotistical.  Following, obeying, complying, and supporting seem much more consonant with Christianity.  But why do so many of us equate those terms with a lack of leadership?  By looking at the Virgin Mary as a model for leadership, we can see that a big part of being a leader is following God.  Mary gave the very best of herself to Jesus and so she becomes the leadership model for all the followers of Christ.

For a lot of Catholics, Lent is a time of finding the easiest way to “give something up”. But, at the end of those 40 days, did that sacrifice really make a difference?

This year, there’s a new opportunity out there specifically for men that will actually help you grow closer to God and become a better man.

You’ve heard me talk about Exodus 90 — but let me tell you about Exodus Lent: a 40-day journey that will challenge you to dig a little deeper this year.

If your first reaction is: “I’m absolutely not taking cold showers” well you’re in luck: men who take on the Exodus Lent get to take warm showers, drink alcohol, and — when you’re with others — watch TV and sports. But don’t be fooled, this will still be a challenging 40 days of preparation for living the Christian life, for the rest of your life.

First — Over the 40 days of Lent, men commit to daily prayer, setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes to spend with the Lord. Each day includes a scripture reading and reflection written to help men better understand, grow in, and live virtue.

About the Topic:
“And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure  their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father whose in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus says “when you fast” not “if you fast”. He expected us to fast. But we should not fast out of dieting or pride, but out of love of God. 
Fasting improves us spiritually in several ways (from <a href="https://jimmyakin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jimmy Akin</a>):

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">We express our recognition that spiritual things are more important than physical things.</li>
 	<li class="li1">We learn to deny ourselves pleasures, even in spite of pain. (Increase in fortitude)</li>
 	<li class="li1">We declare that we recognize the need to reform and to get closer to God.</li>
 	<li class="li1">We willingly embrace the hunger fasting produces as a sign of being willing to shoulder the burdens of others (Col. 1:24 - “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is Lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church…”). What is lacking: Christ’s sufferings were, of course, sufficient for our redemption, but all of us may add ours to his, in order that the fruits of his redemption be applied to the souls of men. </li>
 	<li class="li1">We express humility before God by adopting a humble posture, recognizing our dependence on him and affirming our submissiveness to his will.</li>
</ol> 
4 classes of penitents who committed major sins (idolatry, murder, abortion, adultery) in the ancient formal penitential discipline:

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">Weepers - Not allowed in the church but stayed outside and asked those going in to pray for them.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Hearers - Stood inside the church doors and heard the liturgy of the word but were dismissed before the liturgy of the Eucharist.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Kneelers - knelt or lay down in church and participated with the Church in specific prayers for them before being blessed by the bishop and dismissed prior to the Eucharist. </li>
 	<li class="li1">Standers - sat in the congregation and stayed for the liturgy of the Eucharist but did not receive Communion.</li>
</ol> 
5 Tips when Fasting:

<ol class="ol1">
 	<li class="li1">Have a specific intention for your suffering. Visualize the person you are praying for or the grace you are asking God to give you.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Set a schedule. Scheduling how your day will look helps avoid moments of inactivity. Helps to go to sleep on time and get up early.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Increase the amount of water you drink per day.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Take multi-vitamins. When you fast you will become deficient in some vitamins your body is used to having.</li>
 	<li class="li1">Don’t complain. No one should know you are fasting.</li>
</ol> 
Canon Law on Feast Days: 
Can. 1246 §1. Sunday, on which by apostolic tradition the paschal mystery is celebrated, must be observed in the universal Church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints.
Canon Law on Days of Penance: 
Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Can. 1252 The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.
Can. 1253 The conference of bishops can determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence as well as substitute other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety, in whole or in part, for abstinence and fast.
