When a Confused Christian Found True Friendship at an Unexpected Time | Guest Marc Laudonio

He independently produces faith-based films. His most current film, "Average Joe," releases exclusively in theaters nationwide this Friday, October 11th, and is based on the true story of a high school football coach, Joe Kennedy, whose fight for religious freedom — the right to pray on the field following games — went all the way to the Supreme Court, where he won his case. This guest was also executive producer of the film "God's Not Dead." He played on his high school golf team and went on to be an avid racquetball player for most of his life. He also has a story of conversion to the Catholic faith, which he shares during this interview.

Ever a professional, the dandy-dressed Stephen Henley joins the BeatiDudes, Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein, to talk about the journey of his life on the way to becoming the president of Legatus. Stephen spent two and a half years discerning the priesthood with the Legionaries of Christ, where he wrote his vocation story – aptly titled, God’s Marine. After discerning out of the seminar, the military theme continued, and Stephen joined the Marine Corps. During his time in the reserves, Stephen ended up in Florida, which proved to be an essential stop in his journey. Not only did he meet his wife during his time in the Sunshine State, but he also started his professional career by working at Ave Maria University. Like Legatus, Ave Maria was also started by Catholic business hero Tom Monaghan. Tom Monaghan founded Domino’s Pizza after being raised in orphanages and accidentally joining the Marine Corps. With much business and professional success, Tom searched for a place for executives to gather for Christ. After an impactful encounter with Saint Pope John Paul II, Tom was inspired to launch Legatus. In Latin, Legatus means ambassador, and that is exactly what Tom was promoting for Presidents, CEOs, and their spouses to become - Ambassadors for God. Stephen’s working relationship with Tom stemmed from a period when Tom required a driver while recovering from wrist surgery. Twenty years later, Stephen is now the President of Legatus. Legatus has 90 chapters across North America and is continuing to expand with new, more domestic and international chapters on the horizon. The purpose of Legatus is to study, live, and spread the Catholic faith in the personal, business, and professional lives of executives and their spouses. The <a href="https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2020/10/23/201023b.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vatican</a> has extended plenary <a href="https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07783a.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">indulgences</a> for the dead throughout the month of November. Two main ways to gain the indulgences in the month of November: 1. Visit a cemetery and pray for the dead during the Octave of All Saints' Day. 2. Those who piously visit a church or oratory on All Souls' Day and recited the Our Father and the Creed. The decree also encourages priests to make the sacraments as widely available as possible during November.

As men, we have a tendency to hide our pain from others. We like to show off a strong impervious armor to others when deep down we can be experiencing a tremendous amount of pain. 

Hiding our pain can even extend to hiding our pain from God. Pain ultimately creates vulnerability and that vulnerability can manifest in lies and other forms of sin. We can choose to be vulnerable with God or we can choose to be vulnerable to sin. 

It is up to us to search our souls and share our pain with God. Don't avoid your pain don't ignore your sin; face it head on bringing it to God in Confession and remember that you are not alone in your pain, God is right there with you.

#39 STOP HIDING

Jesus boldly proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”. In order to be His disciple, one must make Jesus Christ the foundation of life and proclaim His Lordship in every area of life. Much like the rose window in Chartres Cathedral, a well ordered soul revolves around the great center, which is Christ. In this episode, Bishop Robert Barron begins a series called The Eight Principles of the Word on Fire Ethos with this key principle, namely, "Christocentrism". Bishop explains how we go about making Christ the priority of our lives, and why we must know who Jesus is in order to do so. He played football his freshman year of high school, moved on to discus and two conference championships in that sport, and then went on to a long career in lacrosse, a sport that he remains involved with to this day. He played for the Illinois Wesleyan University Club Lacrosse team, Oxford University, and Second City/Windy City Men's Club, and he still plays in an over-30 league.
