81: Can philosophy prove the beginning of the universe?

Join the Deacon's Call | Deacon James Thurman has a BA in Philosophy and Masters in Theology from Mount Angel Seminary and is the founder and organizer for the annual Holy League Northwest Catholic men’s conference. 

Ordained in October 2019 by Archbishop Alexander Sample for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, Deacon James has been serving at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Silverton, Oregon. He is a Benedictine Oblate of Mount Angel Abbey. He has served as Pastoral Associate of Catechesis and Family Life at St. Joseph’s in Salem. 

James is a U.S. Army veteran as a Abrams tanker and Field Artillery specialist; he spent three years in active duty and two years in the Washington State National Guard. He currently works as a hospice chaplain. Deacon James is a member of the Board of Directors at G. K. Chesterton Academy of the Willamette Valley. 

He is an active Knight of Columbus, and is currently serving as the Faith Director for the Knights of Columbus in Oregon. He and his wife Kathleen were married in 2009 and have three beautiful children: Isaac, Ava and Maximilian. 

Deacon James loves spending time with his family, pursuing outdoor adventures like camping and hiking, studying the faith, reading spiritual books and playing golf. When time permits, he enjoys raising a glass in the company of good friends.

He is one of the greatest middle-distance runners in American history and currently serves as the Head Coach for Track & Field/Cross Country at Ave Maria University.  He is a three-time United States champion in the 1500-meter run and represented the United States in the event in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.  Prior to his current role he made coaching stops at the University of Virginia, Portland State University, and the University of Arkansas Little Rock.  Following his retirement from competitive running, he became a successful triathlete, ranking in the top 100 in the world in the International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Series in 2015.  In his early days he was even a successful youth swimmer.

A Racing Mind

He is in the middle of completing three ultramarathons in 30 days. The last one will be at the end of this month and is being called an Adoration Ultra, which will start in Mass, then Adoration, and then running to other Catholic churches and spending time in Adoration at those. He currently owns one course record for most miles ran in 24 hours (103.5). In his days as a student-athlete he competed in JV football, JV soccer, varsity wrestling, and ran cross country.  In the case of the latter, he was team captain and the team finished third in the state and he got scouted by some smaller colleges.

Eucharistic Miracles with Angelo Libutti

The Associate Head Coach for the women's basketball team at the University of Akron. She previously was an assistant coach at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, after having spent ten seasons as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) University, where she had competed as a student-athlete, being a four-time letter winner there and three-time team captain.
