In the Face of Adversity

He ran track in high school, competed in intramural sports, later taught himself golf, and coached youth league basketball and baseball, winning a regular season and a post-season title. In 2011 he was ordained to the Diaconate in the first class in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. He has been a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and this year was awarded a Licentiate in Canon Law from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Ontario. A Jesuit priest and an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy, having previously taught in the Theology and Religious Studies department at Seattle University for 13 years. He is also the author of a book called, "Catholic Perspectives on Sports: From Medieval to Modern Times," and the editor of a book on sports and Catholic youth that was just listed as one of the top ten books on sports and Catholicism in the last decade. He was also on the Papal Commission at the Vatican for Sport & Spirituality. And, not only has he coached sports at the high school and college levels, but, he was a captain of his college football team and an All Conference free safety.

He is the Team Administrative Director for the National Football League's New Orleans Saints and has the distinction of being the organization's longest serving employee, having started with the team in 1977 as an assistant athletic trainer. In 2017 the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame presented him with the Joe Gemelli "Fleur-De-Lis" Award, and he has affectionately earned the unofficial title of "Vice President of Everything." He had been a football manager all through high school, having attended Brother Martin High School, which is a private, Catholic, all-boys college preparatory school run by the United States Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

WOF 049: Listener Q&A with Bishop Barron

When someone we love dies, there is often an intense emptiness, an utter loneliness that resides deep within us. We struggle to make sense of and fully accept the way we now experience the love of that person in death. We know that they’re still with us in a very real way—in our hearts and memories. Sometimes their presence is so real, that we can still hear their voice; we can still smell their smell; we can still feel the touch of their hand. Our loved ones may not be here in body but they are very much with us in spirit.

Jesus remains with us in Spirit and Truth through the great gift of the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist, which is a constant reminder of how much He loves us.

Msgr. Lucio introduces a powerful framework for digital missionaries rooted in Pentecost itself. The Holy Spirit sends the apostles out to preach, but the miracle is not complete unless the people understand. Evangelization requires language, timing, tone, and delivery that actually reach the heart. He challenges digital missionaries to remember a third element that is often forgotten: listening. Once a message opens a heart, there is a responsibility to accompany, to follow up, and to care for the real person on the other side of the screen.
Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein reflect on their own experiences hearing from listeners who returned to Mass, pursued deeper prayer, or simply felt seen through the show. The episode closes with a beautiful prayer entrusting all digital missionaries and listeners to the Blessed Virgin Mary, reminding everyone that this work is not about platforms or personalities, but about walking together as a family on mission.

WOF 185: Myths of the Catholic Church

The only coach to win a championship in the NBA and the WNBA. Over a career that spanned more than 40 years, he was the head coach of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Denver Nuggets, plus he went on to be an assistant coach with Golden State, Orlando, Seattle, and Oklahoma City. His WNBA Championship came with the Phoenix Mercury. Plus, he coached men and women's basketball collegiately, at LaSalle, Loyola, George Mason, and Oregon. He even coached in Puerto Rico and in a pro basketball league in Japan. And, last November he put out a book called, "The Speed Game: My Fast Times in Basketball."

She competed in track & field as well as in basketball at Loras College, a Catholic institution in Dubuque, Iowa. She is also the vice president and a board member of the National Catholic Coaches Association. And she is a religious education teacher.

Addiction to pornography is a growing epidemic in our country and around the world. These alarming statistics have only gotten worse over the last decade:

 <li>Pornography is very prevalent in our society, and porn addiction affects about 5-8% of adults.</li>
 <li>People addicted to porn spend at least 11 to 12 hours per week viewing porn.</li>
 <li>Most people who have a porn addiction say that porn hurts their personal relationships.</li>
 <li>Many conditions co-occur with porn addiction, including anxiety, depression, sex addiction, social anxiety and substance use disorders.</li>

Fourth Sunday of Easter (Year C)

The Head Athletic Trainer for the NFL's Washington Redskins, having started in that role in January. He had spent the previous 18 seasons as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Carolina Panthers. Before that he had been the Redskins' Director of Rehabilitation for one year after having started his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins for nine seasons.

CSR 74 Ryan Vermillion

He attended The Citadel on an athletic scholarship, going on to co-captain the men's basketball team in his senior year and then receiving the Senior Class Sportsmanship Award at graduation. He had played for Marist High School in Chicago and was co-captain and MVP of his team in his senior year and was All-State Honorable Mention. He had also played for St. Charles Prep High School in Columbus, Ohio, playing both for the JV and the varsity basketball teams. He'd started out playing on the St. Anthony Middle School basketball team that won the Boys' Basketball of America National Championship. More recently he was the varsity coach of the girls basketball team at Emery High School in Houston. He is also the author of a book called, "Sustainable Excellence: Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life."

CSR 268 Terry Tucker

The Associate Head Coach for the women's basketball team at the University of Akron. She previously was an assistant coach at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, after having spent ten seasons as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) University, where she had competed as a student-athlete, being a four-time letter winner there and three-time team captain. She has since been inducted into the Miami University Hall of Fame for her success on the court.

CSR 95 Colleen Day

He played college basketball at Villanova, including playing with the Wildcats for the national championship and being chosen by the Boston Celtics in the NBA Draft. He would go on to become an assistant coach for men's basketball at Villanova and nowadays is a professor in the Theology Religious Studies department there. At one point he was director of the Center for Sport, Spirituality, and Character Development at Neumann College, where he also served as the chaplain for the men's basketball team. He also spent 15-plus years as a priest.

CSR 189 Ed Hastings

Fifteen years ago she was told by doctors that she had six months left to live! She was the Head Volleyball Coach at Saint Mary's College in Indiana, then moved on to be the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Kansas State University, and then was the Head Coach at Cornell University before moving on to the University of Maine where she established the first NCAA Division I volleyball program in the school's history. She is also the founder of the Maine Volleyball Coaches Association, and in USA Volleyball's Iroquois-Empire Volleyball Association Region she serves as Director and Head Coach of the High Performance Volleyball Program there.
