<div>March 2nd is Ash Wednesday, and over a billion people will start living different in some way. Maybe giving up chocolate or alcohol, or whatever.</div>
For a lot of Catholics, Lent is a time of finding the easiest way to “give something up”. But, at the end of those 40 days, did that sacrifice really make a difference?

This year, there’s a new opportunity out there specifically for men that will actually help you grow closer to God and become a better man.

You’ve heard me talk about Exodus 90 — but let me tell you about Exodus Lent: a 40-day journey that will challenge you to dig a little deeper this year.

If your first reaction is: “I’m absolutely not taking cold showers” well you’re in luck: men who take on the Exodus Lent get to take warm showers, drink alcohol, and — when you’re with others — watch TV and sports. But don’t be fooled, this will still be a challenging 40 days of preparation for living the Christian life, for the rest of your life.

Here’s how it works:

First — Over the 40 days of Lent, men commit to daily prayer, setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes to spend with the Lord. Each day includes a scripture reading and reflection written to help men better understand, grow in, and live virtue.

Second — More than just giving up chocolate, men take up a range of disciplines and sacrifices for the season of Lent. Sweets, snacks, social media, are all gone.

Third — Men commit to a fraternity of 5-7 men. Each week, the fraternity meets to pray together, check in, hold each other accountable and encourage one another.

On Easter Sunday, you’ll walk away with a new and lasting understanding of what it means to live the full Christian life. Chocolate bunnies and all.

ABOUT DEACON 

Deacon Craig Anderson was ordained in February 2011 for the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy (Diocese) of Phoenix,  which serves the 13 western states, and is part of the Byzantine Catholic Church in America, an Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. 

He retired after a career in the Fire service, working as a Fire investigator and fire prevention officer for a northern California Fire Dept. Before that he worked as a Roman Catholic lay minister and high school teacher. He has a Master of Arts degree in Theology and Ministry from Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he met his wife MaryTherese. 

They have five adult children and eight grandchildren. Deacon Craig has been involved in ministry to men for most of his life (and previously served on the Board for Catholic Men's Fellowship of California). He and his wife recently relocated to Fort Worth, Texas.

After Stoicism - A Conversation on Boethius with Dr. Thomas Ward

Having just finished his studies at Xavier in New Orleans, Pradeep Thoppil started working at Tulane Medical Center shortly before Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. As a first-year pharmacist, he was eager to help the team and volunteered to join the pre-hurricane team. He had no idea that when he entered the hospital that day, he would not leave until six and a half days later.Pradeep, a self-proclaimed weather nerd, shares when he realized that Katrina had made a turn and headed straight for New Orleans. Pradeep’s recounting of the race against time includes flooding, the quick decision to move medications to higher floors, praying for people outside the hospital windows after the doors had to be locked for safety, the loss of power, water, and their food supply, creating and protecting a makeshift pharmacy, relocating patients into hallways as the storm’s pressure made the walls breath and windows break, and eventually moving patients up many flights of stairs and out to the parking garage for rooftop evacuation. At one point, Pradeep considered leaving the hospital to meet his parents, which led to an honest conversation with God in which Pradeep realized he was being called to stay for the long haul. Despite the trials that ensued, Pradeep knew he had made the right decision. Sharing this story with The BeatiDudes was not easy for Pradeep, as it brings back many deep and difficult emotions. While there is nothing wrong with surrounding ourselves with like minded people, we must never close the door to those in need or become uninviting to the unchurched. Jesus never said you are not welcome in my group or at my table and neither should we. Listen in this week as John and Victor discuss the importance of fighting the urge to retreat back into the comfort and safety of the initiated while challenging us to become the missionary disciples we are called to be. It's time to get uncomfortable.

In the ascent towards holiness and happiness, a Catholic man must build the good habits (Virtue, from the Latin, vir, meaning “manliness, moral strength, goodness, valor”) of the moral life and break the bad habits (Vice, from the Latin, vitium, meaning “defect, offense, blemish, imperfection”) which cause him to fall into sin and risk losing his salvation. <h2>Twelve  Steps  of  Humility</h2>
Step 1. A first step is taken when one consciously obeys all of God’s commandments, never ignoring them but always holding within himself a fear of God in his heart.
Step 2. The second step is achieved when one thinks not about pleasing himself but instead follow the injunction of the Lord.
Step 3. The third step is reached when out of love of God, one obediently submits to a superior in imitation of the Lord.
Step 4. The fourth step is achieved when one, under obedience, patiently and quietly endures all thing that are inflicted on him.  It should make no difference whether the trials are painful, unjust or even completely beyond his understanding; he should neither tire nor give up.
Step 5. The fifth step is reached when one humbly discloses to his superior all the evil thoughts in his heart, as well as those faults and evil acts he has actually committed.
Step 6. To achieve the sixth step one must without qualms accept all that is crude and harsh; at all times he considers himself a poor and worthless workman.
Step 7. The seventh step is attained when one not only confesses that he is an inferior and common wretch, but believes it to his very core.  He must be willing to humble himself.
Step 8. One reaches the eighth step of humility when he does only that which is demanded by the common rule of his seniors.
Step 9. The ninth step can be achieved when one, practicing silence, only speaks when asked a question.
Step 10. The tenth step is climbed when one restrains himself from undue laughter and frivolity.
Step 11. To reach the eleventh step one must speak gently, without jests, but simply, seriously, tersely, rationally and softly.
Step 12. The final step is attained only when one can at all times show humility not only in his appearance and actions, but also in his heart.
